Homeowner's insurance does not cover all expenses resulting from a fire.

First, homeowner's insurance never pays for the fire fighters, airplanes, helicopters, water, fire engines, etc., used to fight the fire. These are always paid by the government.

Second, insurance pays the homeowners only for the value of the damaged property, and not right away. There are a number of emergency incidental costs, such as housing, food, etc., that they need to pay now.

Third, insurance pays only for the homes that the fires reached. There are a number of emergency incidental costs, like shelters for evacuated persons, for persons that the fire endangered but did not reach.

4th, most of the damage is to plant life (national forests, etc.), not to homes.

Tim
The millions they are spending right now is to fight the fire and provide emergency services for thos evacuated.

Yes, their homeowners insurance should cover the damages. The government offers assistance but not in lieu of insurance.

We are talking right now of more than 1250 homes burned in San Diego County alone. Over 500,000 have been evacuated. This is a massive disaster.

Even with insurance, the ability to rebuild all these homes will be limited due to available contractors, materials, etc. They are still rebuilding from the big fires 4 years ago.

The government is spending millions on firefighting and temporary disaster relief. That doesn't mean they're going to pay everyone's property losses.

It's not just the houses that have to be repaired, it's the roads the street signs, schools ect. Plus the cost of temporary housing. The insurance companies take time to issue their checks. Not to mention the cost of actually fighting the fire.

Yes, those people should have homeowners insurance to cover the replacement costs it is required by all mortgage companies, but the government should still use their resources to attempt to contain the fire and keep it from spreading more. As well as, provide shelter for those people until they are able to file claims with their insurance company, which won't be until after the fires are put out.

I'm pretty sure its to pay for all the materials used to protect buildings from the fire and to put it out like water and foam. It may also be that they are paying to repair govt buildings too.

To protect property and life is the mandate of the local, city, county, state and federal authorities.

Besides, burning everything (tress, grass, etc) just fuels the fire. Better to put it out for the sake of reducing the damage.

I agree with you all the way, if you choose not to take out insurance, then in my mind, other than getting you to safely, the government shouldn't give you a dime.

The only exceptions I can think of is people on Section 8, that rent, don't own, and are probably too poor to afford renters insurance.

My problem with it is that the Federal Government shouldn't be spending my tax dollars to assist the people in California. Yes, it's a tragedy. Yes, those that are affected need help. Yes, the government should step in and assist. But it should be the California State Government, not the Feds, that bails its citizens out. Those homeowners knew the risks going in and if they don't insure themselves against natural disasters-well, I'm sorry. That's not my problem!

Back in the 1800s some insurance companies ran their own private fire departments. That didn't work so well because they would only go to houses that had their company's insurance.

Basically you pay taxes to fund your local fire department, if you didn't have a local fire department then the cost of your insurance would be higher. This is a rating factor called 'Protection Class' in the pricing sequence of your insurance policy.

If the fires are deemed to be a catastrophic disaster, then the government steps in to offer low interest loans for those who qualify. All indications are that this will be ruled a catastrophe.

Well, you want to mitigate the loss! It's irresponsible for the GOVERNMENT to just say, hey, *I* don't live there, let the fires burn down all the houses in Orange County, we don't care because they have insurance!

We're talking potentially thousands of houses.

Keep in mind, part of the RATING FACTOR that goes into house insurance, is governmental FIRE PROTECTION - how far you are from a hydrant, or a fire station, or even IF there is a fire station.

If the government just said the heck with it and let all fires just spread until they died out, you can be damn sure insurance companies wouldn't insure for fire, as they wouldn't be able to cover the losses (just like, nuclear explosion and war are currently excluded). THEN you'll have a massive problem on your hands, because no one would be able to buy a house without paying cash - and in CA, well, you'd have a real estate crash that would make Florida's troubles look pleasant.

Some people cannot afford insurance so the government is stepping in to help.
