FightingIrish | Rear end collision, my fault, suggestions? |
***so i got in a car accident today, my fault, i rear ended a lady. she didn't have her insurance info on hand, but i had mine so i gave it to her, as well as my phone number. she just gave me her phone number for contact
**** i have some dmg to my car but won't file a claim through my ins for repairs. i am aware that she will file for her dmgs through my insurance company. do i need to let my insurance company know if the claim, even if i don't want my car repaired? I feel that the burden is on her if she wants to go through my insurance for her dent to her bumper, and my ins will contact me when they need to
***she wasn't injured, and she said that if her harp was 30K harp was dmged she would seek payment from me. we both looked at the harp and agreed it was fine
*** this is a new car only 3 weeks old, and i am a male in his twenties, just was wondering if this will affect my premiums
Sorry alot of info but this was my first accident and any advice to handling this would be great |

OK, here is the deal, there are a lot of decent pieces of info in the answers above. The bottom line is this. If you call and report this to your company, then she can't come back later and say, oh but my harp IS damaged. I would turn this in and let the company have it out with her. This may affect your premiums in the future depending on how much the company pays out. Then again, if it's your first accident it may not affect it much. If your company comes out having to pay for a new $30k harp your insurance rates would skyrocket. Be up front with your company and then if she never actually files a claim, then you are the good guy and no harm done.
Good luck! |

tell your insurance people.
I had a similar experience just last week.
I banged into the car in front of me at the lights.
The guy gets out of his car and walks up to me and he is a midget.
He looks at me and says "I'm not happy"
So I say "well which one are you then" ?
and thats when the trouble started. |

You are required to call your insurance company within 24 hours after the accident, even if you aren't claiming damages. (The insurance company will then have a heads up that someone may be contacting them soon.)
In my state it is also mandatory to fill out an accident report at the police station (who will then contact the DMV) within 10 days of the accident.
It is in your own best interest to do both as soon as possible. |

You should notify your insurance carrier. Also, in some states, you need to file a report with the state DMV. |

You should call your insurance company and give them the facts of the accident as you remember.
The insurance company will attempt to contact the claimant and then the ball is in her court.
In most cases your insurance rates will not be affected unless there is a payout on the accident.
If you call the service department they should be able to give you their company's policy on accident penalties. |

The first thing you do is report the accident to the insurance company even if you decide not to declare your damages. Make sure the agent knows exactly what happened, why it happened and what you and the lady discussed at the scene. If there is any change in the story both you and the agent will be aware. Most likely your premium will go up. Maybe this will teach you to pay attention always when driving. |

Yes, notify your insurance company, as she will call hers, who in turn will contact yours, who will then call you. So why wait? She made a mistake in not getting a police report, since it was your fault, so now it will be your word against hers. |

You need to call the insurance and report the accident. Your premiums will go up. I suppose you could pass on repairs to your car, but I would ask the agent if it would make any difference on future premiums if you get it fixed. Remember you have a deductible on your car repairs. |

Your ins. would cover any property upto your max. also 30K is what SHE thinks it's worth. so they would pay foe repair or a swap. |

I wouldn't report it unless she does to your insurance company. You would be suprised how many people are too lazy to get minor damage repaired and never call to get payment.
If your insurance company calls you just say you lost track of time, apologize, and say you didn't know you needed to report it...you are only 20, and I'm sure they hear that all the time. |
