Nancy | Recently got mail addressed to Estate of (my mother) followed by my name from a Life Insurance Company... HELP? |
She died 15 years ago - back in 1993 =(
It says RE: Conversion Options for Policy Number: XXXXXXXXX. Says something along the lines that I am covered under the policy but it will expire upon my XXth birthday (coming up soon!) I am the youngest of all her children (like to think I was her favorite!) and none of the others know anything about this. Insurance Company is obviously wanting me to continue coverage b/c it included a proposal prepared for me with a few of my personal information pre-filled. 1) Never knew I was covered. Did receive several privacy notices and surveys from the company over the years but never thought anything of them. 2) Does this mean my mom had purchase life insurance with this company? 3) Since all the mail I have rec'd in the past was always addressed to the Estate of (my mother) followed by my name... is it possible that I am the beneficiary? or was there no beneficiary named so thus it became "the estate of..." We always thought she had one life insurance policy (Dad was beneficiary so my dad already collected on that one when she died to cover funeral, etc.) 4) Could this have been a secret policy that she kept from the family? 5) Afraid to call the Life Insurance Company. How should I approach this? Can this be a scam? How do I go about claiming? What information do I need? Would be nice to know if she left something for me.
Will appreciate all your feedback and help. |

I would suggest making a phone call to the insurance company to get some clarification or details about the policy in question. It is possible that your parents purchased a policy on you as a child that provided coverage until you reached a certain age, such as 21. At that point, you could continue the coverage by applying for a conversion of the policy.
This is pure speculation on my part, as I don't know the details of the policy. There are so many different types of life insurance policies that without more information, a guess is about as good as anyone can offer on here.
As far as it being a scam, I wouldn't think that is the case, but you can be certain by contacting the insurance company for more info.
Please either post or email what you find out. Good luck in your research. |

Call the insurance company. It could be the policy ends at a certain age. It it has personal information that other people would not know then it probly is not a scam.
It doesn't sound like a scam, but if you find something fishey, then contact your Dept. of Insurance or Insurance Commissioner in your state for help. |

Why are you afraid to contact the insurance company? That's the only way to find out the facts. |

You're best bet is to contact the company that is sending you the letters.
IF you were the beneficiary, it likely would only be adressed to you and not refer to your mothers estate first, since they know you are the primary beneficiary. The only exception to this would be if you are a minor (or were when the policy was taken out) and no trustee was named. Then they wouldn't know if you're old enough to deal with it so it would go through your mom's estate.
It sounds more like you're mom had a child rider on her policy or your mom was the owner of a child policy on you. The Child Rider is the most likely thing becuase those are typically only good until age 18, 21 or 25 depending on the company and then you need to covert it to a whole life or stand alone policy. A child rider is when someone has a life insurance policy and they can have a smaller poilicy attached to it, like a term insurance rider, or a child rider (ussually a couple grand to cover funeral expenses just in case). It's ussually cheaper than buying a second policy becuase it's only good for a certain time period and more rigid than a regular term policy.
I would assume this isn't a scam of some sort (if it's a company that your mom already had business with, I'm sure it's not a scam) |

If you are getting mail with a policy number on it, there is a policy. I'm guessing it is not a policy your mom took out on her, but on you. There are several life insurance policies out there for kids that parents pay one premium, and it usually covers about $5,000 on the child, and is paid up, and with that policy it states that at a certain age you can get more coverage without proving insurability. This is very important if you have health issues when that age comes. Too many people can't get life insurance and your mom did a sweet thing for you. No need to be scared, Just call the insurance company, give them the policy #, and ask them if you are the insured, or if your mother was. They will send you the forms needed to get more insurance if you wish. If not, you can keep that policy inforce. Good luck |

1. Never ignore paper that *might* be real.
2. Yep, could be that she bought a policy for you, when you were born.
3. It's highly unlikely that YOU were the beneficiary - that type of policy would pay out IF YOU DIED. She was probably the beneficiary, but you'd have to contact them to find out for sure.
4. Yes, it could be secret, but she would have paid the company every year, so there'd be cancelled checks somewhere.
5. Is it Mutual of Omaha, or Globe Life, or Gerber? Those are the three biggest, Gerber, by far, writes the most policies on babies/children. Yes, it COULD be a scam. Anyone who asks YOU for money, or personal information, is probably trying to scam you.
Email me the "company name", and I'll check them out on www.ambest.com . . or you can.
It's entirely possible that this is legit. But, they're asking you to convert the policy - meaning, KEEP PAYING after you hit 21 or 25, so the SECOND question is, IS THIS A GOOD DEAL. Most of the time, the answer to THAT question is, no.

It doesn't sound like you are a beneficiary of anything. You might have had some minimal coverage on your own life through her policy - this sounds like a sales pitch to take out a policy on yourself. Or it could just be a scam. In either case, unless you were planning to get life insurance on yourself soon, I'd just toss it out. |
