ceceruby | Renter's Insurance? |
I'm a college student who is in the process of getting my 1st apartment. Well, all i have to do is sign the lease and turn it back in, but it also says that i must get some sort of renter's insurance!!! what is a good cheap/reliable company?
Thanks! |

Your landlord actually CAN ask that you have renters insurance. He or she probably wants two things: one, to know that you have liability coverage in case you or a friend causes a large amount of damage to the apartment (water overflow, fire damage, etc.), and two, your landlord probably doesn't want you coming back to him or her if the building is destroyed trying to sue him for your personal property.
Your landlord is just trying to protect himself and you in case something happens. The benefits of a renters policy make it almost insane to turn down for the price.
As everyone has said, look to where you have your auto insurance. You'll get the best discounts there. Otherwise, just about anyone should be able to help you out. It's possible that you and your roomates could all go together on a policy that would cover all of your personal property. Any agent should be able to help you make a good decision.
Good luck! |

The cheapest one is the same one that writes your car insurance - the discount off your car insurance will more than pay for the renters policy.
A basic renters policy costs about $150 a year. Dirt cheap. ANY independent agent - or any captive agent - can place this for you. Any A rated company is just fine - these are pretty much "cookie cutter" policies. |

Check with the company that carries your car insurance. Often they give a discount for multiple policies. |

The cheapest thing to do would be to see if you are covered under your parents homeowners policy. If you are a dependent full time college student, your parents homeowners policy might cover your belongings (5% of the total property insured) and also cover any liability you create within the policy limits (like burning the place down). So, if cheap is the way you want to go, have your parents check with their agent to see if there is coverage under their policy. There would be no charge for your parents, just automatic coverage. Also if there is coverage, they will provide a evidence of insurance certificate for you to show your new landlord.
If that doesn't work then the suggestions above about contacting your auto carrier to see if they offer renters insurance is a good one. |

Renter's insurance in general is pretty cheap, ranging from $15-$30 a month for the average college student. You're looking to get about $10,000 worth of coverage, which should be enough to replace your belongings in the event of a disaster. The average All-state policy is $24 for renter's.
FYI: if you have a digital camera, is to take a video recording of your apartment with all of your stuff in it and save it, in case you ever need to prove what you own (this is like taking an inventory). Also take pictures of new things you get, like new electronics, artwork, etc. |

Depending on where you live you will find that either State Farm or Allstate offer inexpensive policies. That said, while it is a very good idea to get renters insurance which will cover your personal belongings in the event of fire or theft, your landlord can not compell you to purchase the coverage if you don't want it. |
