Renters Insurance? What Kind? Is it really worth it?
I am renting a condo from a friend, got a good deal, just signed the lease, he recomended that i get Renters Insurance because he said damages I make to the place or to other owners in the condo I am responsible, even if something happens to me, the insurance would help.
Now I would like to know any good insurance agents (e.g Geico) should i get Renters/or Condo , not new to this, want a good rate yet want good coverage for damage, fire, theft you know.

Renter's Insurance is for you and your property, not the condo itself. Your friend should have a landlord policy in place for the condo.

When shopping there are a few things to consider.
1. Make sure the policy gives you "replacement cost" not "actual cash value" on your personal property.

2. Find out the limits for specific items. Jewelry, watches, and furs for instance, will have a dollar limit that the insurance policy will pay. Make sure these are high enough to cover your belongings or plan to "schedule" any specific items that go over that limit.

3. Make sure it includes some kind of additional living expenses coverage. This would kick in if you were unable to live in the condo due to a fire for example. The policy would pay for any additional expenses that resulted from you having to live somewhere else while the condo is being repaired.

Renter's policy's are very affordable for the coverage they offer. They are diffidently worth it. Shop around and find an agent that you like and trust. The difference in price between companies will not be that much, so it's better that you find a quality company.

Check with State Farm, Farmers, Allstate, Insurance discounters. Question them on rates, amount of coverage, types of coverage and length of policy.

I think so because it is so cheap. Our $50,000 policy costs $200 a year. That is $16 a month it is worth it.

Renters insurance CAN cover various things depending on your policy. Typically they cover theft (subject to deductibles and limitations such as jewelry) and liability (where someone gets injured in the condo). Contrary to some other answers, the owner's policy does not cover these types of things (theft or injury to guests). Also, renters policies typically do not cover damage to your property from earthquakes (which is generally another policy). Call about 3 to 4 of the major insurance companies in your area or an independent agent who can explain the specific coverages.

If you have auto insurance contact that agent. You would then get an auto/home discount on both policies. If not, contact an independent agent. They can do quotes with multiple companies for you.

OK, renters insurance isn't going to cover any damages you do to the place, or any "medical payments" if something happens to you.

Renters insurance is CHEAP. Maybe $150 a year. It will cover your stuff, for fire & theft, and your liability, if you get sued. The best place to go is whoever writes your car insurance. ANY A rated company will give you a standard policy. So if your car insurance company doesn't write renters insurance, any local agent can get you a decent policy.

Your buddy should have some liability coverage for you. The only coverages you should need to carry is for your contents and for a special form called 'damage to premises rented to you.'
Make sure your buddy has changed his old insurance policy to a rental insurance policy (fire dwelling policy). If he hasn't it isn't your responsibility to have insurance for the interior walls or liability limits.

The policy should come to about $100-120 a year. Check with your local Farmer's guy or state farm they can can set you up well.
