Shannie G | Retroactive Health Insurance? |
I have been to the ER 3 times in the past week and racked up about 12,000 in medical bills, with no insurance and no definitive answer as to what is wrong with me. If my boyfriend and I marry, is it at all possible that they will cover any retroactive period? I know it would vary with insurance companies, but I think he has Blue Cross or Blue Shield. I'm also going through the govt's red tape, but I don't expect too much help from them. Advice? |

This is a prime example of what I have been saying for the past twenty years, please purchase health insurance when you are healthy! Do not go without health insurance, think of it like this; if you purchased a 1million dollar Enzo Ferrari would you drive it 100miles per hour with no car insurance?.. Your body has much more functions than a 1milliion dollar Enzo Ferrari, and can cost much more to fix, but everyday a small percentage of our population continues to throw the dice and not purchase healthcare. |

No such thing as retroactive insurance. Be sure not to get married until the bills are settled otherwise his income will be taken into account on settling the debt. |

Some plans will go back thirty days, but most private insurances won't. Have him check his policy. |

Nope. You have to have insurance at the time that you get 'services'. It would be like driving a car without insurance and then - when you wreck, buy insurance to cover things.
Just doesn't work that way.
A bit of good news might be that many hospitals are willing to have a 'payment plan' that you can get on - so your credit isn't ruined and you are paying down the bills. Just get a final bill that is itemized and review every line!
sorry for the news, but that's just how it is. |

No, they won't cover these bills retroactively. |

Sorry to hear about your situation. Now not only can you not get those bills covered retro - when you do apply for insurance you will have pre existing conditions that will most likely not be covered. If you are self employed, depending on what your condition is - you may want to look into a small group policy (it will be expensive). You can also work for a company that offers group coverage. As far as individual policies go, some will exclude your pre existing condition or others may add a higher deductible to cover it. I hope it is nothing serious.
My question for you is - why did you not have any insurance??? If you really could not afford it, there are state medicaid programs set up for you. They will look at your income and assets to determine eligibility. If your income is above the level - you need to ask yourself what you can cut back on to afford it. It is a matter of getting your priorities straight. |
