Roth IRA, Traditional IRA- Which One is Right for You?

Doing the Right Thing
I have a Roth IRA. Why? Tax-free withdrawals after age 59 1/2. No mandatory withdrawals at age 70 1/2, so I can keep the account for life.

In Traditional IRAs, your contributions may be tax-deductible. It all depends on whether you have a retirement plan at work or not. All withdrawals (except non tax-deductible contributions) are taxable. You have to figure out your minimum withdrawal requirement every year starting at age 70 1/2. If you don't withdraw this minimum withdrawal requirement, there will be a 50% penalty on the minimum withdrawal balance.

Which one is right for you? For most people, it would be a Roth IRA. For people who want to lower their taxes or they don't qualify for a Roth IRA, then they should get a Traditional IRA.

For me, a Roth IRA is best. For you, only you can decide. Check the link below for details about the differences between the two.

It depends on how old you are and when you plan to take the money out.

I would prefer to pay tax on, say, $1000 now, than to deduct that $1000 and pay tax on what that $1000 grows to in 40 years.

I believe the governement would raise the percentages on the tax brackets (which would cancel the benefits of a Traditional) before they would tax Roth's.

I have a Roth IRA for now because I am in a lower tax bracket hoping one day my income will go up.

Good Question

Jason
Depends on you. Are you needing tax advatages now. Go with a traditional. If you qualify for a roth and don't need the write off now it can be much better when you take your money out to go with the roth. Talk to a financial planner to find what is write for your situation.

Uncle Leo
If you think you'll be in a lower tax bracket in retirement than during your working years, a traditional IRA is probably better. If you think you'll be in the same or a higher tax bracket, a Roth IRA is probably better.

Basically, chances are that if you are in your 20's or 30's the Roth will be better. If you're in your 40's or older, a traditional IRA is probably better. See the webpage below for detailed info.

You can access any online banking facility and you'll find information there. You can also find articles online pertaining to these issues. Roth's are good because the taxes are taken out right away as opposed to being taken out later for a traditional IRA

OK, I only have traditional IRA's, me & hubby, because when push comes to shove, I don't believe that Congress is going to leave the income from a Roth IRA untaxed, after all.

I don't trust the government.
