James1982 | Scamming insurance? |
I bought a house and was convinced by the realtor to purchase a so called "Appliances Insurance". Five months later, water heater gone bad, called the insurance company. They were very nice to take the claim. However, the plumber they sent came over and claimed that he needed $350 from me to replace the heater. I checked the website, if I buy one by myself...the cost would be $310 plus tax, have a contractor to install it $150. Likewise, w/o insurance, cost from me would be $460. I paid $410 for insurance, add what the plumber asked $350, total will be $760...does this make sense? Additional Details Yes, it is covered in the paper, insurance agent told me that I only have to pay $55 deductible on the phone. |

Fix it, pay it and then cancel that insurance.
A rule of thumb ... you should only insure for things that you can not afford if they should happen. Things that you could pay for ... don't insure. |

No, sounds like a scam.
Check it out with your state attorney general's office. |

That sounds like a scam. Cancel that ins and shop for a new policy or just save the money on your own. |

Wouldn't you send the bill to the insurance company?
actually I have never heard of this type of insurance. |

When you purchase insurance, their is always a deductible. Could the $350 be it? And there is always depreciation. Considering the cost of new appliances, insurance isn't worth it anyway. |

You need to find out what the deductible is on that insurance. You will have to pay the cost of the repair up to the amount of the deductible.
If the deductible is $350, then that is how much you owe out of pocket. The insurance pays the rest unless there are other fees and stipulations.
READ THE POLICY. |

You are looking at this slightly wrong.
W/o insurance, you would pay $460 for this one incident.
W/ insurance you pay $350 and "save" $110.
The question is, will more than one appliance break over the term of the life of the policy. 4 or more, then you save money over and above the policy. 3 or less, no. |

Call them back, or talk to the plumber. There's a miscommunication there. If it's covered, you should only be paying the $55. It might be the plumber that's scamming you. |

Isn't it covered by insurance? |

it sounds like the plummer is trying to scam you. The plummer shouldn't ask you for any payment at all. The insurance company should handle any payments with the plummer. If I were you I would cancel the insurance and just get it fixed your self |
