cmaechilders | Should I buy a life insurance policy before leaving the country? |
I am going to study in Poland, Germany, and China for an MBA program. I will be gone for almost 11 consecutive months. My parents have asked me to purchase a life insurance policy for a couple thousand dollars. Isn't that weird, or am I just over-reacting? I am only 22 years old. Why would I need a life insurance policy for a couple thousand dollars? |

Most life insurance applications asks:
"In the past two years, have you traveled or resided, or plan to travel or reside outside the U.S.?"
The reason for this question is that it puts you and the insurance company at additional risk.
If you answer this question "Yes", your policy will probably be rated up, or depending on the company, it could be declined.
If you are dishonest, and say "No", if you should die while overseas, the company could contest the claim, if the policy is in within the two-year contestable period at time of death.
Some insurance companies, though, will issue smaller amounts, such as $2000 - $10,000 on a short application, not listing that question.
For a short application, locate an agent in your area, who writes for American Fraternal Union, if it's licensed in your state. Log onto www.afu-life.com.
Monumental Life might also be able to help you.
If you have read some of the questions about insurance, you may have read some about young familiy members getting killed, and having no life insurance.
Yes, you need life insurance, to pay for your final expenses at least. Later, as your career progresses, and get married, have a family, and a mortgage, you will need enough to keep your family in their "own world", financially speaking.
My suggestion is to buy as much life insurance as you can, while you are young, to "insure your insurability", in the event you wouldn't qualify because of your health in later years.
Have a safe trip, and study hard. |

Your parents are quite right. But all you need is a good life insurance policy. That you can get from one of the reputed insurance firm.

Repatriation of remains is not cheap. It's very popular. Try one of our ancillary site travellifeinsurance.com It's pretty inexpensive coverage. |

Judging from your post, you are single with no dependents. In that situation, the only good reason (imho) for life insurance is go ensure that nobody (such as your parents) will be saddled with things like funeral expenses in the event of your death. At the risk of sounding a bit morbid (but then, life insurance kind-of is), a couple of thousand dollars sounds like it might be enough money to ship you home if you die. That would definitely fall into the category that I am describing.
Of course, I don't really know anything about your family's situation, so perhaps there is another reason that I am not aware of. |

Well, if you die oversees it will cost them a lot of money to retrieve your body and bury you. I would suggest $25,000. |
