Mr. Hellpful
Should I elect my offer for COBRA insurance?
Here's the Situation:

My wife just get her full time management job to go to school and now is working part time. I'm working full time, but at my position they only offer my insurance no family members. For this reason, our son, her and myself have all been on her insurance. Now that she has quit, we are eligible for benefits for 18months. We just got approved to get insurance for our son through welfare. So we only need her covered.

Is it possible to only cover her? How much of a pain is it? And anything thing else you could add would be helpful.

Zarnev
It is possible to cover just her or both her and you. You also have the option of going on your employer coverage.

The employer must notify the plan administrator within 30 days of her termination. The COBRA coverage must be offered within to her within 14 days after the plan administrator received notice. She then has at least 60 days to decide to accept. She'll have to pay the premium back to the day her coverage ended. She'll pay the full cost of the coverage plus 2% admin fee.

Here is the government website concerning COBRA: http://www.dol.gov/ebsa/faqs/faq_consumer_cobra.html

I would make sure she has insurance no matter what. If she has no medical issues she may be able to get an inexpensive policy online, BUTTTTTTTTTTT read the terms very carefully. I went to ER for abdominal pain and gaive them that policy card. I was discharged that night (Sat) because they got the pain stopped and they could not do a test until monday. Why stay and run up a bill for a room I didnt need? Read my policy on sunday and found that since I was not admitted to hospital they would not pay the bill. Called on monday and spoke to a rep who said because of the way it is written that was true, but if I needed Gallbladder surgery they will pay for part of that. The ER bill was over $8000!!!! I went right down to my old job and paid the cobra of $385 for a month and called the billling dept and had info changed. Cobra for $385 a month also paid for the gallbladder surgery that was approx $15,000. I ended up with $1200 worth of bills, thats better than $15000.
You never know when illness will strike. While cobra is expensive it is better than nothing and most cheap internet policies.

Are you sure that you can not add her as a pretax voluntary deduction at your work? You do pay for it, but it may be a heck of a lot cheaper than COBRA.

You need to immediately check on that - like today and then immediately find out the cost of the COBRA and compare.

There is also what is called short term insurance with higher deductibles. The rates are lower (I have it right now) but the coverage is not a good. It's basicly catastrophic.

It is not good to let your insurance coverage lapse if you can help it. It makes it harder to get it later.

I am so sick of this country's healthcare mess. We are supposed to be the riches and most modern county in the world (well probably not now), yet our citizens are worthless at least to the Republicans.

I have a 63 year old sister with state IV cancer who can not retire because of the healthcare issue. I can go on and on.

Check all of these things out soon. And good luck!

Yes, you can buy it to cover only her. HOWEVER. 1. It's going to cost you 102% of whatever the EMPLOYER was paying. 2. If "welfare" finds out, by asking her former employer, if coverage would have been available through them for the child, they'll cancel the child's coverage

It's not a pain, but it can be painful - painfully expensive. There's NO grace period for your payments. So be darned sure to get that payment in the mail at least 10 days before it's due.

why did she quit - now you have to pay 102% of the entire premium to cover her, where before, she was probably only paying 25% of it thru her paycheck - even just for her, it might cost you $350-400 a month for single coverage

bballpurdue22
I only know a little about COBRA insurance and I take it you haven't looked that much into it yet. COBRA is very expensive because the employee pays for the premium. You would probably be better off looking for personal health insurance through an agent (still expensive)...or wait until Obama provides universal health care.

yes you can only get it for her....but geeezzzz it is so expensive...seems like if the son is qualified through welfare..she would be too????

She can elect to cover only herself, but you need to make sure that your state allows the child to be covered on medicaid if you have the option to cover the child on COBRA. Some states will not allow medicaid for a child who is eligible to be covered on a group insurance plan. When you contact medicaid, be sure to state that the coverage is COBRA. Since it is expensive, it may be allowed. If it is allowed, then when she gets the COBRA election forms, she only needs to elect to cover herself (and of course pay the premium timely).

COBRA is to continue employer group coverage after one terminates employment. She needs to discuss the issue with her (former) employer.
