It's really cheap - about $150 a year.

Do you need it? I don't know - if you guys were both at work, and your apartment caught on fire, would it be a problem if you lost everything in it?

If no, you don't need it. If yes, you should probably get it. And if you have car insurance, it might be "free" - because if you go to the same insurance company that writes your car insurance, the discount off your car insurance will likely pay for the renters policy.

it is fairly cheap.

the major point of renter's insurance isn't your things, it is the liability lawsuit that might happen if someone comes to your door and trips over your things, or your one day children's toys.

Renters insurance is very inexpensive, possibly as low as $150 a year if you don't a lot of expensive things. Keep in mind that renters insurance not only protects the personal property in your apartment, but it also protects your liability. Renters insurance is a great value and everyone renter should carry it.

Anywhere from around $150-300 per year in most cases.
Yes you NEED renters insurance.
Why?
What if you have a fire in the place? You will have damaged property NOT belonging to you and will need to pay for that.
What if you have an old person fall down your stairs or off your porch? Lawsuit!
What if you are biking along (not driving) and you don't notice a kid dart out in front of you and you hit him and he's injured. LAWSUIT!
You bet you need renters insurance.

As others have pointed out the liability coverage of a renters policy is very important.

Frankly, if you burn down your apartment with a kitchen fire you won't give a damn about your stuff when some insurance company is coming after you for $25,000+ damages.

The liability coverage protects you in case you are liable for damages. I would suggest a minimum of $300,000.00 of liability coverage. It is cheap and well worth it.

As a claim adjuster, I have handled cases where renters didn't have liability coverage and are stuck making $300 payments each month to an insurance company. It's like making a car payment with getting the car to drive. Please protect yourself and buy the coverage.

Hi !

Renters Insurance is not expensive but it is a good policy.

It should be taken for sure if you are having Fish Aquarium / Pets in your apartment or staying in a high rise.

Renters Insurance or also known as Home Insurance is a good policy for every household to secure the belongings from Fire, Flood, Water, Rains and natural calamities. However, you are advised to look into the policy wordings carefully including exclusions. The heart of Renters Insurance is the Liability coverage which must be read carefully.

Many apartment house owners insist for Renters insurance to safe guard moving-in or moving-out damages to the apartment or the lift.

The thumb rule for Renter Insurance Policy is that for a house worth USD 0.50 Million (inclusive of belongings / electronics etc.), the policy premium should not more than USD 200/- per annum for a basic cover.

So. you may want to go for it.

Cheers !!!

It should run $150-$200 a year depending on how much stuff you have. You may not have a lot of nice things, but if you sit down and add it all up you will likely be surprised how expensive it would be to replace everything. Definitely get it!

I would say, talk to your landlord first, and see what is covered under his/her homeowner insurance policy.

Normally the renter's insurance policy should cover the followings (which are normally not covered by homeowner insurance):

- Natural Disasters that pays for temporary housing.
- Burglary. Personal belongings being stolen when there is break in.
- Fire caused by neglect. (Don't smoke inside your room!)
- Work / Business Equipment: items such as computer system, etc.
- Liability for third parties. Imagine a visitor slips on the wet kitchen floor surface.

It is cheap. It's for liability and some time it will cover you if someone steals stuff form you, even out of the car.
