For a young person the most important after paying your rent and food are (in order of importance)

1. Major medical coverage
2. Money in your IRA or 401(k)
3. Keeping your car up to snuff
4. Keeping your skills up to snuff

Once you are married and/or a homeowner, these become:

1. Major medical coverage
2. 2 years disability income coverage, usually equal to 1/2 to 2/3 your earnings
3. Your homeowners and mortgage insurance
4. Your 401 (k)
5. Your car insurance
6. LAST - Life Insurance, but not as an investment scheme, just the basic insurance, so your wife can pay off all bills if you suddenly croak and not be in poverty while raising the kids the rest of the way.

Note: These days BOTH husband AND wife must work, but women will naturally have less employment while in last stage of pregnancy and while properly caring for toddler-to-third grader kids.

The itemss mentioned BEFORE Life Insurance are there precisely because they are FAR more important than life insurance.

Accident Insurance has many exclusions and limitations. Only 1 in 10 people die from an accident.

Get accident insurance ONLY for a particular flight or long trip.

Insuerers get the money for their deep pile rugs and luxurious furnishings by selling lots of accident insurance for people who do not know what I know, which is the far more important ones listed in the correct order above.

Make sure as a married person that you get enough coverage first. Consider two policies. A term and a VUL.
What company are you looking to buy whole life insurance from? Many have stopped selling it and have replaced it with Universal Life or Variable Universal Life. If you want to buy a true Whole Life plan take a look at Northwestern Mutual Life Ins. The rest are all junk.
If you are looking at a UL or VUL ask for the target premium and then ask about the max that you can put in each month before it becomes a MEC. I would look at a VUL that you put in just under the MEC.

As a young person I would advise whole life insurance, because that is an investment as well as insurance. Whole life is of course more expensive than term insurance.

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! Young people should buy term insurance (as much as you deem necessary). You can get level term (premium is fixed) very cheap for 10, 15 or even 20 years. Then take the difference in what you would have paid for whole life ( a very poor investment vehicle) and begin a meaningful, diversified, investment plan built on equities, tax-free investments, and mutual funds. Pay off your credit cards and then go buy that house you want.

And leave the money to who after you die? I really don't see the need of life insurance, unless you're really poor who can't afford a funeral.

Life insurance should protect against loss of income. If someone relies on your income then you should carry life insurance until such time that you have self insured (your savings/investments/estate can replace your income if you die) or someone no longer relies on your earnings.
Whole life is very expensive for the amount of actual death benfit you receive. It combines insurance and investing but doesn't achieve either very well. When you need to maximize the coverage for your dollar you should buy term life insurance. Very inexpensive (especially when you're young) and allows you the most coverage per dollar of premium. Shop for it online from a company that will allow you to comparison shop numerous carriers (term4sale.com) and then purchase from a highly rated (financially stable) company.
