Should I not buy health insurance?
I'm 22 and about to graduate. I'm in good health and have $60,000 in savings. Health insurance costs $400 a month. I'm thinking about taking a part-time until I can apply to a teach-English abroad program that I want to do next year.

What should I do? Would it look bad if I had a full-time job for a few months just to get the insurance and then quit? I'm leaning towards not getting health insurance.

I will do some shopping around. That price is with the insurance company that insures me now (through parents).

Unless you've got some special circumstance, in which you'd probably have to have insurance, there's no way that you should have to pay $400/month for insurance. I've seen places online that do insurance policies for about 1/4 of that price, do some comparison shopping and I bet you'll find a much better price.

As far as having insurance, I'd definitely get it, because you never know what could happen. I got sick just as I became eligible for insurance at a previous job, and spent 4 days in the hospital as a result. I had late onset Type 1 Diabetes at 28 years old. The hospital stay alone would have been over $30,000.

Get insurancebut shop around and get a better deal $400 a month is way too much.

I agree, $400 a month is too much. At your age, you can purchase a very comprehensive health insurance plan for at least half that number.

I would shop it around with an independent health insurance broker to find a suitable policy.

You can afford a good health plan, so there is no excuse for not owning one.

I don't think by getting a full time job just for the insurance is immoral. In fact people get jobs for a lot of different reasons and sometimes the money is not the obvious reason. Even though you stated that you are in good health today, that may not be the case tommorrow. You should opt in for low cost health insurance, and make sure you get a plan option for someone who does not visit the doctor frequently.

Good Luck!

Graham
at a young age you really dont need health insurance, but there is a chance something could happen and you need health insurance so i would probably say yes

Since you are in good health you may want to consider obtaining coverage through a discount benefits company. Ameriplan is a National Discount Benefits Company that provides discounts on Medical, Dental, Prescription, Vision and More! The monthly cost for the plans don't even come close to what you pay for insurance and they provide you with a huge savings on your services. You can save the $400 you would have been paying in premiums and when you need to seek medical care use some of that savings to pay a discounted price for your services. If you would like to know more you can contact me or visit www.SaveonMedicalandDental.com
