Danielle G | Should I pay a missed appointment fee to a doctor? |
In April I had a doctors appointment scheduled for a consultation. I drove 40 minutes from my home, one way in order to make the appointment. I also had to take time off from work in order to make the appointment. I get to the office, wait 45 minutes and then I am told that the doctor wouldn't be in due to an emergency. I had to reschedule my appointment and rearrange work, etc. to make the next appointment.
Fast forward to August when I was supposed to have a follow-up appointment. I forgot about and missed the appointment. A few weeks later I received a letter in the mail charging me $25 for a missed appointment fee.
In any other circumstance I would have written the $25 check and sent it in. However, I never asked to be reimbursed for the time, gas and work that I missed to keep the first appointment, so why should they expect for me to pay them for an appointment that I forgot about.
So I wrote the doctor a note explaining why I feel that the charge is not warranted. I received a notice from them registered mail and have not picked it up from the post office. I don't know what their response will be, however, I don't feel that I owe them one red cent.
Any thoughts? |

Send the doctor a $25.00 dollar bill for HIS missed appointment.
And add a note staing that since you owe him $25.00 your willing to call it even and not insist on travel fees.. Send it certified so he gets the message. My time is as equally important as the doctors. And make no mistake....so is yours!!!
Most likely the office manager will see it before the doctor but you must call attention what is a common problem among private practices.
i work at a hospital and I am all too familar with the "emergency" excuse. |

If their registered letter insists upon payment I suggest you had better pay it or find another doctor. It isn't fair, I know, but they hold the upper hand.
If you do pay it I would talk to the doctor about it the next time you see him. He may not even be aware of what's going on. |

~~I agree with you, you should not pay. This plain and simple is not right. The only way you should pay is if you are reimbursed for your fuel cost for his missed appointment, and the time you missed from work. If they agee to that, then defintiley agree to pay their $25.00 fee.
If you get any further grief over this, speak with the office manager. Ask to speak to the doc if she doesn't stop this nonsense. Trust me, this will not go any further, it's too low to even turn into collections for them.~~ |

I do not feel they should make you pay the bill, However I would pay it only because it will go to collections. And as far as charging him for the missed appointment- would be nice but when we miss days at work no one can charge us. |

You can be sure that this will be a quick correction on your doctor's part once they recieve your letter- you'll probably be given an apology for the error on their part as well. I would follow-up with a call to your doctor's office on monday morning to explain the situation if they have not corrected it all ready- they may be able to correct this right over the phone. |

I kinda agree with you. Doctors make us wait unreasonable times, and it's time they were held accountable for some of it. Why is their time so much more important than ours? why are doctors allowed to create multiple bookings in the same time slot? It's so frustrating. |

I agree with the other post. The doctor and his office didn't respect your time, your job or your position when you had to drive in to make the appointment. And then there was an emergency and you weren't reimbursed for having to reschedule.
If you have not signed an agreement with the office, then you are not liable for this ridiculous fee. In fact, send them a bill for your time as well. Remind them that your time has value too. After all doctor's are NOT gods. They are technicians. Highly paid technicians. |

I would not pay this bill.
I would instead bill your doctor for your time including commute. Then send in both bills with a request for payment within 20 days.
