Karl | Should all tobacco products be banned from the workplace? |
My employer banned indoor smoking years ago. This just drove the addicts outside where you have to go through their smoke whenever entering and exiting a building, just sickening! The company won't take a stand and ban tobacco from it's premises.
I do believe in one's individual rights to treat their body as they wish. Live and let live I say, however..................
I only have three problems with smokers:
- I don't like smelling them or breathing their carcinogenic smoke. Smokers smell disgusting!
- I'm disgusted by the way they use the world as their ash tray, throwing their butts everywhere.
- I don't think I should have to pay for their healthcare when there is so much information telling them that it is destructive to their health and everyone who is exposed.
(Note to you sympathetic smokers. Alcohol, obesity, extreme sports, etc are no excuse for the rest of us having to support your addiction or pay for the health results!) |

Both of my parents died young and smoking was a factor.
I don't like the smell of smoke, it makes me physically ill.
I hold my breath when entering or leaving the mall and buildings where smoking is allowed right outside the door.
I think if people want to smoke, fine, they've been warned.
But there should be smoking areas, away from exits. |

Only if the company wishes to do so. They would choose for themselves, as they are the ones taking the risk as to whether their company will succeed. I have never understood, if we are a democracy, why we act socialist for companies. It should be the private sectors own decision.
You do not have the right to work there, if you don't like your environment, find a new one. |

Yeah, and they should come to your house, empty out all your fattening food from your cupboards, force you to brush your teeth, and wear deodorant...... |

Well, I think there should be a designated outside smoking area so people don't have to walk through smoke to get to and leave from work. I remember living in Oregon, you couldn't smoke within 30 feet from the entrance of any building.
I think people should be able to chew tobacco since it's not harming anyone physically.
Littering and second-hand smoke are legitimate complaints, but I don't think that making them pay more for health care is right. If we start that, then people will have to pay more if they eat french fries or drink coke. That becomes a very slippery slope indeed. |

Why don't we ban drinking? Why don't we suspend driver's licenses for people on cell phones while driving. That would certainly ease congestion on the roadways. |

Your entire rant contradicted the statement you made about "one's individual rights to treat their body as they wish".
I'll address your three problems with smokers.
1. I don't like the way alot of people smell. Some people smell like the haven't bathed in weeks that work in my office.
Should my company ban B.O. from the office? How will that go over in public relations?
2. I agree that smokers and non smokers should not litter. People throw their cigarettes on the ground. People throw their trash out the car window. People throw their trash in landfills instead of recycling some items. Everyone plays their part in keep our world clean.
3. If you are going to say that, you must include overweight people, alcoholics, people with eating disorders, drug addicts, etc. All of which are just as harmful as smoking to your health. You don't pay for their healthcare anyways. Their employer does!
My theory is: Some things are never good enough for people. I agree that workplaces should be smokefree inside. But outside, come on. Smokers have to smoke somewhere. |

Sorry, I come down on the side of freedom, not the side of government interference. I believe it's up to the company owners to make that decision.
I'm a rabid anti-smoker - hate the smell, hate hanging around it, don't patronize any places where smoking is allowed. But I don't believe the government should step in and make this decision.
Also, NOT banning tobacco IS a stand. If you don't like it - find a smoke free workplace.
Personally, I'd NEVER work in someplace that wasn't smoke free, OR anywhere I'd have to walk through "the gauntlet" of smoke to go in. |

You are very intolerant. Your company should not ban smoking. Your company should place a rule not to smoke within 50 feet of the entrance. And 50 feet away they should place receptacles for the smokers to discard their cigarette butts.
You can't change litterbugs unless you penalize them where it hurts, in their pocket books. So they should review the video tapes of the exterior of the premisses and counsel the ones who dispose of their stubs inappropriately.
You don't have to pay for their health care. Employers get a group plan and the smokers pay the premium, just as with life insurance. At least that is how it is where I work. |

No not really, so long as the site is well away from non-smokers, also smokers shouldn't lite-up at the bar but should
go to a well ventilated area provided specifically for this purpose. |

Yes all company's should banned smoking!!
As a ex smoker I can't stand the smell of it!!
When you walk outside that's all you can smell!!
I think that there should be a law and have to stand so many feet away from all building not just work but the mall restaurants etc!! |

No. I think fat people should be banned from the work place. |

I agree. Dallas has taken the first step in making all restaurants smoke free. I work down town and there are more cigarette butts on the streets than anywhere else I have been. They post smoking signs telling people where they can smoke but I deliver food and have to walk through that haze everytime I have to go down certain streets. You know what I say to do....... Walk past them and fart. See how they like to smell nasty CR4P. I also say let your dog poop on peoples yards if they put a cigarette butt in your yard.
Smoking should be banned at the work place. Why should you get 15 minutes to puff down smoke while I work. It is anti-productive. |

MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY.
AND---they get FREE smoke breaks. While I am working, they get to go outside and suck on a cancer stick and get paid. |

smoking in the workplace - here it is fairness for all.
Breaks - The policy in most employee handbooks are clearly defined. Nowhere will you see the phrase "smoke break" in any policy that is well written. Neither will you see cookie break. The reason for this is "There is no such thing as a smoke break, or a cookie break."
Everybody gets the same amount of pre-determined breaks. If you choose to smoke on your break, then do so. If you choose to eat 10 cookies on your break then do so. Leave on time - come back on time. The smoker gets no more breaks than the cookie eater, and vice versa.
Cleanliness - If a cookie eater leaves crumbs and wrappers all over the break room, that is unacceptable behavior and is not allowed. Signs should be posted, with trash can available for proper disposal. Also paper towels for wiping up ones mess. The same applies to smoking. If a smoker makes a mess with butts on the ground, the smoker will be held to the same standards as the cookie eater.
Unclean air / environment. - Nobody should have to walk through smoke period. Just like no one should have to be exposed to someone else's urine, feces, snot, or mist from sneezing. These are tenants of basic human respect. If a person is violating these basic human rights, then someone must intervene, and have one of those difficult discussions with the employee. Of course, discussions of that nature are usually followed by defensiveness, arguments, and petty finger pointing. It takes someone that is skilled in the art of respectfully presenting the case, and holding accountability. Rare these days on all levels,
Therein lies the true crux of the problem.. |
