Why shouldn't they? People pay for insurance, don't they? Are you also going to eliminate people who eat fattening foods? How about those that don't exercise? People who drink, or maybe just the ones that drink and drive? Then there are those people who lay out in the sun and give themselves skin cancer, what about them? How about people who walk at night in Washington DC?
In short, you are picking one bad habit and discriminating against it. I know its politically correct to trash smokers and it brings in tax revenue. But when they eliminate smokers who are they going to tax and eliminate next? When are you going to be on a list of somebody with bad habits? You support this type of discrimination now and it will surely get to you sooner or later. |

Well, they DO. It's like asking, should insurance companies cover gays (aids risk). Or women (childbirth expenses). Or worst of all, FAT PEOPLE (don't want to START listing the expenses of health related issues for obese people!!).
It's good public policy to cover these people, although they seriously cut into the profitability of the insurance companies. Because of that, high risk behaviors such as overeating, smoking, and giving birth are subsidized by people WITHOUT those high risk behaviors. |
