Should people who live unhealthy lifestyles have to pay more for insurance than people who live healthy lifest
yles? I think so..

My Uncle Don would never take care of himself. Two quarterpounders, large french fries and a large Coke was his usual twice per day, meal of choice. He probably saw a doctor 15times per year and had outstanding health insurance. He admited that he would be healthier if he was not 250pounds overweight. He said that's what doctors are there for.

I always take care of myself. I am not overweight, do not smoke, drink and have never used any illicit drugs.

Theoretically, yes.

In practice, no. Do you want the insurance health cops tracking how much fast food you ate this week? I don't think so.

Yes, if people who are keeping themselves healthy, at least they're not costing themselves much, we can give them the proviledge of them paying less for health insurance, it does seem fair right? However, if this tend of the unhealthy citizens see this they would get jealous of themselves, and I do agree that the unhealthy people should take action.

Their risk is high to pay more on their insurance already especially obesity and diabetes and some cancers.

Bottom line: Unhealthy people are already paying more on their health insurance than healthy people, because they do not take care of themselves. If the insurance company increase the cost of insurance, they can't pay for the insurance anymore.

Should they? yes... somepeople do

This is a really difficult question. I suppose that theoretically you are correct since insurance is just betting on how healthy a person will be in order to make money from insurance payments from healthy people and minimize the losses from sick ones. There are two problems though. First it would all have to be policed. The health insurance people would have to send out agents to check how healthy you are eating, give you urine tests and to check how fast you drive, or whether or not you choose to dive from the 12 ft diving board of the 3 ft. board. The second problem would be to decide exactly what is healthy for everyone. Some might say eating one quarterpounder a year is tolerable, but others might say it's okay to have two a month. And then, how much sugar can one put in one's coffee? Is this amount different for diabetics? Is it unhealthy to drive a convertible, even if one's driving record is flawless? Is it unhealthy to play football, even touch is a little rough. Would people who have desk jobs have to pay more since their eyesight seems to get bad from staring at computer screens, and they get headaches, and sometimes back problems?

Do you see what I mean? If it were possible to magically know if everyone is doing his or her utmost to be healthy, then it would be a good idea to charge those who are certainly livining an unhealthy lifestyle more, but it just isn't feasible.

I think it is time for the country to take care of it's own with health care. But you suggestion might be a little out there, in the end we all pay for others, like shop lifting costs.

Many plans currently reward people like yourself. For instance, my medical plan at work gives a discount (on the rates) to anyone who participates in the company wellness program. The program includes things like having an annual physical, not smoking, having a gym membership. Non-wellness participants pay the standard monthly rates for coverage, and wellness participants save almost 15%.

And yes, I believe that people who intentionally live an unhealthy lifestyle should pay more for health insurance than people who take care of themselves.

There are two answers to your question, depending upon whether the unhealthy person is on an individual plan or a group plan through work.

With an individual plan, many companies will charge a higher premium for people who smoke or are overweight. Every company has a height and weight chart and Uncle Don would not even be able to get on a new individual plan being 250 lbs. overweight. Companies will also charge more or exclude pre-existing conditions whether resulting from an unhealthy lifestyle or not.

With group policies, the premium charged is based upon the total health of the group. Not only does the unhealthy person pay more but so does everyone in the group. When the health insurance premium goes up for the group everyone in the group can thank Uncle Don for some of the increase.

Well, they DO!! If you're obese, you're going to have a REALLY REALLY hard time finding ANYONE to insure you (health insurance) for ANY price, and if you're looking for LIFE insurance, you're going to have to pay close to face value!

So, it's already there.
