Should smokers, heavy drinkers and overweight people be required to pay more for health insurance?
It seems unfair to me that everybody pays the same price. The healthy subsidize the slobs who require more long term care because of their habits and addictions.

Every single person on this earth does something that is not healthy/good for them. Whether it is eating junk food, drinking alcohol or soda, smoking marijuana or cigarettes, NOT exercising or over exercising, not wearing their seat belt, etc. etc. etc.

many do pay more for health insurance. that is why they give you a questionaire and doctor checkup is sometimes required.

What about skinny people in Alaska who have more health problems in the cold weather?

Smokers are usually thinner, so it may balance out.

Moderate drinking can make some people healthier.

People who spend too much time in front of computers should have higher rates because of he increased cancer risk.

Insurance companies have enough reasons to refuse to pay what they promise, why give them more reasons???

Well, overweight people DO pay more. Smokers and drinkers? Kinda hard to tell.

And there are a lot of other risky, voluntary behaviors - do you think we should charge extra for people at higher risk of aids (homosexual men)? How about women of childbearing age (labor and delivery costs!) How about sexually active people who aren't married (STD's)? How about every blessed 16 year old, newly licensed driver??? Kids that play sports??

At some point in time, the number of different groups you'd have to break out becomes unweildy. From a practical point of view, the more rate classes you have, the more it costs the insurance company to promulgate rates and track profitability in a class.

Additionally, every state's insurance commissioner has to APPROVE the rate differences, and the commissioners that are political appointments, well, saying, Hey! I'm allowing insurance companies to charge more for fat people (30% of the population) isn't exactly politically correct. They won't keep their jobs.

Lastly, there is such a thing as a social concience - being your brother's keeper. We do have a responsibility to each other, as decent human beings. I, for one, am happy to pay a bit extra for my kids' health insurance, knowing that one in ten thousand kids with the same insurance rates will be able to get chemo if they develop leukemia.

I think that is fairly prejudicial. Yes, they may have and increased chance of health problems due to these factors, but we all ru the same risks daily by walking out the front door. According to some health experts, even our produce could be poisoning us because of pesticides and genetic engineering. Just simply walking downtown puts us at risk for air polution, we could get salmonella from eating bad chicken...etc. There are just as mnay risk factors to those who do not smoke, over eat or drink heavily than those who do.

Should the millions of smokers, heavy-drinkers and overweight people who are quite healthy be required to pay more for health insurance?

viensmevoir
while smoking and drinking are a choice, some overweight people are not overweight because they let themselves go. Some heavy people i know fight genetics tooth and nail with both diet and exercise. you may believe that you are a healthy weight because you work so hard and diligently, but you are also lucky to have the genetic endowment that you have (i think about this every time i slip into my 33inch waste pants... not that skinny but it could be so much worse!) i think you should be very careful in categorizing very different groups together all as "slobs" and [addicts].

now all that being said, i think that smokers should pay more for their habit, but that is already being done in the form of huge taxes on cigarettes. we do need to tax and discourage smoking, but we have to do so without being pejorative toward smokers because they are also people deserving of respect and dignity.

Considering that your attitude (as i perceive it) does not really discourage smoking but it does make people feel bad, your comment is part of the problem and not part of the solution

To a certain degree, they already do. Their premiums for health and life insurance are much higher than your average non-smoker/non-drinker.

Long Term Care is based similarly to Life Insurance, and they pay according to the underwriting terms on the LTC policy. Usually, it is higher, based on their lifestyle.

But...anybody who has a higher risk lifestyle pays. If you are a skydiver, stunt man, or something like that, you will be charged more because it is nearly certain at some point you will have an injury or claim.

Smokers ALREADY pay more...
So, where do we "draw the line"...???? Some folks are overweight (or look to be so) because of anti-rejection drugs from transplants..do we fine them, too??? So what's a heavy drinker??? One beer??? Two???what???
Suppose something happens in your life to change your weight, or drinking habits..even for a temporary period of time? What then? Do you want to also include those that get say, heart disease from HEREDITARY factors? How about those in extreme sports or risky jobs?
You're opening up a can-of-worms that has no right or wrong answers...just prejudices and ignorant talking heads....

Hey... and the people that don't work out at least 1 hour per day can pay more because it's proven that exercise keeps you healthy

and the people with high cholesterol can pay more (too much red meat you know)

and the people that work in high risk jobs that are more likely to result in injury (because they picked their job - they could have picked a safer job)

and the people with a history of cancer in their family because they are more likely to get cancer

and the people who do not keep their homes neat and tidy because there are more likely to be germs

and the people who don't wash their hands frequently because they are more likely to get sick and to spread sickness

..... see the problem. It becomes a slippery slope and where does it stop?

Smokers and alcoholics, yes. I bet it would cut down the amount of people who smoke and drink, and then we mitght have a much healthier world. Overweight people no. A lot of them have a thyroid problem, and can't help their weight. A friend of mine has a thyroid problem, she's vegan, and she still weighs 250. People who endanger their lives with drugs, smoking and alcohol should have to pay more though.

Caring girl.

I agree smokers and heavy drinkers should as that is self inflicted. Overweight people yes if its self inflicted but if its a medical problem like a fibroid gland them no.

I definitely agree! Although I am a smoker and I do get charged more for health insurance, I also think heavy drinkers and overweight people should, too.
