Should we be penalized for another's health insurance usage?
Our health insurance rates are increasing another 25% (went up 15% last year, 5% year before). Enough employees were concerned to inquire, "why all the increases?" The company explained due to a long term employee's usage of health insurance, the increase is necessary. She is 89 years old, and has utilized over $1 million worth of health insurance, hence, the increase. My husband and I are healthy, and only utilize health insurance for preventive maintenance, and absolutely necessary, and no children yet, so....why should we be penalize for others utilization? Forgive me if I sound callous, I truly don't mean to be. Your perceptions are appreciated!

Engineer: I am implying she should be "dropped" due to her illness, but should we be penalized. Should we be responsible.

I totally agree. I do not think it is the poor 89yr old woman's fault. Nor is it your responsibility to pick up the extra cost. Any one of the employees there may need that much care or more. It is the insurance companies responsibility to handle the cost. Isn't that the point of insurance? You pay the same amount each month whether you use a little or a lot. Insurance is to be there when you need it. Another frustrating part of this is that medical institutions like hospitals and pharmaceutical companies cheat the consumer. Bottom line. When a single band-aid costs $10 in the E.R. visit. There is something seriously wrong. You get a star for such an interesting Question. I just wish some of presidential candidates could read it.

The Shadow
In think that you may misunderstand how insurance is supposed to work. The purpose of insurance is to spread the risk of losses over many people so that overall rates are more affordable. If everyone paid based on personal history, the healthy people would pay very little and sick people could not afford any coverage. You're doing well now, but your insurance would become too expensive for you if you had an serious accident or contracted a serious illness.

Yes, it's unfortunate that your rates have gone up. However, put the shoe on the other foot. If you were the one with health problems, would you want your rates driven sky high (possibly to the point where you can't afford them) so that everyone else could get off cheaply?

I'm not sure I buy your employer's explanation. But in any event, suppose you or your husband come down with a serious, life-threatening disease that requires similar costs of medical care. Should the company kick you off the plan because you're now a nuisance?

Not true. Health insurance isn't "rated" like car insurance. They might be telling you that in good faith, but the honest truth is, health insurance costs for EVERYONE have risen between 25% and 50% per year, for the last 5 years or so - because the COSTS have risen.

If you bought your policy on your own - assuming you're 30 and healthy, it would cost you two, $300 a month EACH, without maternity benefits. That's just what it costs these days, for HEALTHY people.

The per capita expense for health care in the US in 2005, was over $7,000 (according to Consumer Reports). That's PER PERSON, each man, woman, and child. That's the average. And it's only going up. Health insurance doesn't surcharge for claims. Once you have the policy, EVERYONE gets the rate increase. If they shop it out, THEN, just maybe, if it's a small enough group, they'll look at claims.

If you're all on the same employer group plan, why *wouldn't* you expect that your employer's plan might be affected by excess utilization?

That's how insurance works - the risk of potential future claims is spread across a group of people. If you only want to be liable for your own claims, then stop using insurance, take the money that you'd be saving on premiums and use it towards your own medical expenses. Being a cash paying customer is really the only way to not have anyone else's expenses affect you (or at least minimize it as much as possible).

Of course, then you're also accepting the financial risk if you end up having a huge medical bill in the future.

You are not being callous, you're being realistic.

No. I don't think we should all be penalized. And it's a shame. But car insurance does the same thing to us, even for those who have exemplary records.

To me, everything but my paycheck has increased in the last five years. This poor elderly woman may not be able to afford her own care. For anyone at any age who has devastating illness hit the family and the finances, it seems there ought to be some kind of negotiations perhaps between the providers and the patient, to resolve each matter in a fair and proper way.

I too pray for the way up and out of such debt, for the individuals who suffer, and for the healthy individuals who also suffer financially.

I think you're missing the real problem. Health care coverage worked just fine when the companies that sold it had to be not for profit. Now that they're allowed to be corporations, pay outs to provide medical services to the insured have taken a back seat to multimillion dollar salaries for the upper echelon, and dividends to the stockholders.

The corporatists have us fighting amongst ourselves while they're robbing us blind.

I know America and Americans are all about individuality, but In a society there exists other people. Many times people forget this. There may be other things in society where you benefit and others don't. Police, Firemen, Roads, there could be anything. I haven't called the police in years, but my neighbor did when someone broke into her house. I don't begrudge her using my tax dollars that way. Some day you may need unexpected health care (or police, firemen, military, etc.) and you will be happy its there.

Hopefully now that one of their own (crybaby Glen Beck) had a bad experience with health care, conservatives will finally admit there is a problem.

Here's my advice: Go see a movie, volunteer at a soup kitchen. Engage life to the fullest instead of sitting around wondering how you're being treated unfairly today.

Wow, you should hear the other questions we get on this topic. They're asking the opposite.

I once heard a lawyer say about arbitration that, "a good arbitrator will finish their job with neither party being happy." I think our system is pretty close to leaving no one happy. It is not perfect however.

Insurance companies used to spread losses over large groups of people. Everyone paid for the few with high losses. Now insurance companies use small groups so that when a big loss comes along the group will become uneconomic and end the loss for the insurance company.
