Should you have contents insurance?
Even if you have nothing of real value

Yes.

Consider this: you are cooking chicken on the stove. The door bell rings ....you go answer it and end up buying a box of girl scout cookies. You return to your kitchen to find the pan of chicken on the stove has caught fire. Fortunately, you keep a fire extinguisher handy and are able to put the fire out.

The fire caused damage to your stove, vent hood, cabinet and of course the pan and chicken are a total loss.

Is that the only thing damaged?

Nope

See.....the smoke and fire extinguisher chemicals get all through your house...into your vents and into every room. Odds are....you go to take a pair of socks out of your dresser drawer (that was closed at the time of the fire) and they will smell like smoke. Smoke gets into every thing!

Your contents coverage will come in - pay to remove every thing from your home (ever stitch of every thing) - clean it and bring it back. I've handled smoke claims where the laundry bill alone was $8000-$18,000. If the item can not be cleaned - your contents coverage will pay to replace it.

If you don't have contents coverage......you get to deal with all that smoked up stuff yourself.

Highly Highly recommend contents coverage.

If everything were lost in a fire, flood, tornado would you like to have some insurance with which to buy replacements?

Yes yes yes. I learned this the hard way. We didnt have content insurance on our flood policy (this would apply to fire or any other disaster) and low and behold a flood hit our home and we lost everything we owned. Just starting out as a newly married couple we didnt have much or at least we thought until we had to replace literally everything!! Luckily we could borrow the money and about $20,000 later we were back to normal and this wasnt buying the top of the line high tech things either this was just normal things.. furniture, clothing, etc. so dont make a costly mistake. To add contents on to your insurance is a measly cost compared to having to pay back a $20,000 loan at 9% interest!!

It my mind, no. Renters insurance is the least filed claim made. It might give you piece of mind, but you already said you don't view your contents of any value. I think you just answered your own question. Save your cash for others like life insurance, auto insurance, health insurance, dental insurance, long term care insurance, prescription drug insurance, liability insurance, long term disability insurance, short term disability insurance...you get the idea. They are going to get your money somehow, don't help them out when you ahve "nothing of real value" for something history has said is rarely even used.

Well, the flip side to that is liability coverage.

If you really have nothing to lose - if your apartment burned and you lost everything, and it wouldn't bother you or set you back at all, then no, you don't need it.

If it would be a hardship to lose everything, then yes, you should spring for the $100 A YEAR, and buy renters coverage.
