The answer is C - not guaranteed; not guaranteed.
You are talking about the shares of a company. The company may make profit or a loss.
If it makes a profit, the board of directors decide whether or not to give the dividends. If they feel that retaining the earnings will increase the shareholders' wealth in future, they will retain it. If they do not have any better proposal than the next best opportunity (as per the board of directors) then they will disburse the dividends, but the share value will increase and there will be capital gain to the investor, if he sells them in the secondary market.
If the company makes a loss, there is no question of giving dividends. Also, if the market does not see much future of the company, then the share value in secondary market will collapse and there will not be any capital gain either.
I think the matter is clear to you now.
In debentures, a fixed return is guaranteed, not the stock (shares). The shares are considered as the equity. |
