See i got a speeding ticket that was 9 miles over. The cop was the first nice cop i ever met, so the original was like 13 or 16 miles over, so he reduced it. He also said he reduced it enough that it won't affect my insurance. Also if i pay at the court house with cash will my parents find out?

If it's your first ticket ever, and the first ticket doesn't count in your state, then your parents won't find out. If the first ticket counts, then they will find out when the policy renews and your surcharge is on it. |

It depends how old you are and where you live. Here you have to have a parent/guardian if you are 18 or younger.

You don't say how old you are, if you are under 18, your parents may need to go to the courthouse with you to pay your fine. If you are over 18, you can pay the fine and you don't have to tell your parents. But you should tell your parents, my son got traffic tickets when he was younger and I was madder when I found out way after the fact. You may receive documents in the mail too, so telling your parents now is still the better thing. I think the cop was right, the higher you speed over the limit, you have the potential of much higher insurance rates. |

I don't know if the cop was correct, he may have meant that the ticket would be cheaper at 9 miles over than at 16 over. If you are on your parent's insurance, they probably will find out. However, you could take defensive driving to keep it off your record, it should cost around $100 which includes the court costs and class. You need to find out from the courthouse how to take the class to dismiss a ticket. You can then tell your parents that you're taking the class to lower your insurance, and you'll send the class certificate to the insurance company to lower your insurance. Whether you fool your parents with your reason for taking it depends on how easily they are fooled. Even if they do find out about the ticket, they should respect you for taking the initiative to keep it off your record. It's worth it to take the class so your rates don't go up and you actually save with the discount you'll get. |

If you are on your parents insurance, they will find out unless you go to traffic school and have it removed from your record. Just because the cop said it won't affect your insurance, does not mean that it won't show up on your MVR (motor vehicle record). Most insurance companies will show what is on your MVR regardless if they are charging for it or not. By reducing the speed, he may have made it acceptable for traffic school. He probably didn't do very much to help you! He was just trying to make himself not look so bad. He still have you the ticket.
As stated before, if you are under 18, more than likely you will have to go to court with them anyways. |

Just tell them and get it over with. It's just not a good idea to keep things from your parents. If they do find out eventually, they'll be more mad that you hid it from them than they would be about the fact that you got the ticket. |
