It is actually simple. In essence, go to a test prep company -- such as AD Banker, to complete your 52 hours of classroom work; in the meantime, get an appointment to sit for the state department of insurance exam.

BTW - the 52 hour required course can now be taken on line as well as in a physical class.
The website can be a bit confusing, but what you want to check out are the fees. Roughly, and I mean that, getting from class to being licensed (including getting your fingerprints, etc.) will cost roughly $450 or so, give or take a bit. As for how long it takes, that's a bit up to you. The 52 hour class obviously takes 52 hours :-) but whether you do that in a solid week; in various evenings; or in weekends over about 6 weeks is up to you and your schedule.
The test - it's hard, but obviously passable. If at any time during the study time for it, you begin to worry that you won't pass because you're "not smart enough", don't worry. Just look around at all the people who DO have a life license and realize a lot of them are not the sharpest tools in the shed yet they passed (including me :-)
Remember that once you DO get licensed that California also requires that you've taken an 8 hour annuity course as well. That information is listed under the life agent section.
