Sorry, you are going to be out of luck - at least you would be in the US. Here's why.
Homeowners covers the named insured and resident relatives. You are not related by blood or marriage to the homeowner, so even if their policy covers for theft off-premises (away from the house) it won't cover you because you are not an insured under the policy.
If you want coverage for your stuff while you live with your girlfriend and/or her parents you have to have a separate Renter's Insurance policy (whether you actually pay rent or not).
And to correct a previous answerer, many homeowners policies do cover off-premises theft - it depends on the company. Still, many people here in the US take out a separate Personal Articles floater on their laptops. It gives much broader coverage than you would get under a homeowners or r enters.
All that said, things COULD be different in the UK. There's certainly nothing wrong with your girlfriend's mum checking with her insurance agent.

With every insurance policy you have an excess which you have to pay before any claim is settled. Sometimes this amount can be £50 - sometimes it can be as much as £200 (the higher the excess the lower your monthly premiums). This figure then gets deducted from any settlement, so lets say your laptop was £800, you then deduct the excess and get your total amount. You could end up getting as little as £600 back which means you'd end up with a lower quality laptop.
Some policies do a "New for old" or a "Like for Like" and this is the stinger! Recently we had an £800 bike stolen from our shed. Our insurance company told us we had a Like For Like policy, and this meant that they could find a bike which cost just £150, but as it had the same range of gears and spec as our bike, that's what we'd get.
It's unlikely your gf's Mum claiming this year would affect her premium next year - it won't increase but it's unlikely to be lowered.
Another thing to keep in mind is that some polices also stipulate that high cost items need to be listed with them. With my policy, we have to list anything over £1000 for it to be classed as covered. |

There are a couple of isses here:
You would need the Personal Possessions cover "add on" to your home contents policy. The excess would typically be about £50. This is the part of the policy that covers your "portable items" whilst outside of the home. A laptop would certainly be considered portable.
However, and this is the main issue, if you are currently living with your girlfriend at her Mums, you may have to prove that you are a permanent resident there. Alternatively, that you are a resident at your own parents house.
You have to bare in mind that Insurance Companies can and DO follow the policy to the letter and it is in their interest to look after themselves and turn down claims if they have a right to do so.
Definitely get in touch with your girlfriends Mums insurer in the first instance and if they can't help, try your parents.
The only other thing I can think of, is if it is a new laptop and it was purchased with a credit card, perhaps the credit card company provide cover for it?
Hope this helps and good luck. |

1st you have to ascertain which is your main residence - remember you will have to prove this or at least the lender will want proof of this.
2nd you need "All Risks" cover may somtimes be termed at cover outside home or personal possesions outside home etc but "all risks" is the industry term. if you didnt have this you defo wont be covered
3rd even if youve got lucky and you have passed the above 2 criteria, 99% of insurers will only cover theft from a behicle if the item was "in a locked compartment and hidden from view" such as a glovebox.
best of luck mate |

Unfortunatly it sounds like you're in a situation where you will have to speak to the home insurance people. I know for a fact that my old insurance had an option for goods 'outside' the home to be covered, such as wallets, bags and the like... However, I do remember that the excess was rather high.
If your gf's mum's insurance doesnt cover it, perhaps you could check with your parents insurance???
And it would be worth speaking to your gf's car insurance people again, as there may be an option they arent telling you about... basically just try speaking to a supervisor/another worker there and see what they say... they seem to make up the rules as they go along in my experience.
goodluck... |

You could try but I doubt it. Sorry, maybe next time you'll be a little bit more careful. |

the chances aren't great because you weren't at home. home insurance doesn't pertain to something stolen out of a vehicle that was nowhere near the home. sorry. |
