Student Health Insurance

Starting nursing school, was told to use on-line health insurance companies. Anyone have feedback on reputible company? I'm in the state of PA.

You can use the on-line quotes only if you have the time needed to compare nearly 1000 plans (maybe 3 or 4 days?). The insurance companies also have height and weight guidelines as well as underwriting guidelines for pre-existing conditions. If you fall outside these guidelines you don't know it until you've applied and been declined. Then you've got to report the decline to the next company you apply with. That's not good.

A better suggestion is to visit a local independent agent. This person knows the plans available in your area (and the guidelines) and can find a plan that is best for your situation. Also, your school may have basic policies available. Those policies don't cover much but the premium is reasonable.

Be very wary of medical discount cards. They are not regulated by the Department of Insurance nor do the people that sell them need to be licensed. This means you have little recourse when you have problems with the plan. If you are tempted by the low price and claims of â€œsave up to 80%â€ be aware that very few doctors actually take these cards. It does you little good if you have to drive 4 hours to find a doctor that will accept the card. One state couldnâ€™t find any doctors in that state that took the card and only one dentist who was on probation for unlawful activities so they banned the sale of the card. Before signing up with any discount plan get a list of doctors. If they wonâ€™t give you a list consider it to be a scam. Be sure to CALL the doctors on the list to make sure theyâ€™re still taking the card (many donâ€™t even know that theyâ€™re listed as a provider) and that theyâ€™re accepting new patients.

? That's the WORST way to buy health insurance, you're MOST likely to get scammed, or buy a policy where your "local" provider is 200 miles away.

If you want health insurance, and can't get it through the nursing school, you'll need to visit the guy who writes your car insurance, or another local agent, for a quote.

If you were covered on your parents insurance before, they can still cover you if you are in school
