Suicide=no life insurance $?
Hey everyone..I'm doing an essay for my writing class..the topic is: Should life insurance money be given to the families of those who commit suicide? I have reviewed policies from a few insurance companies and they DON'T give the money if it is proven that the person has taken their own life. Is it like this with every other insurance company in America?

I live in Florida, and State Farm's policies will not cover suicide for the first two years the policy is in force, but then that restriction is lifted. I don't know if it's Florida law, it may just be left up to the individual insurer.

I had a client who found out he was terminally ill and after satisfying himself that it was incurable he visited me and the other agents he had coverage with and asked this same question and a few others in a general conversation about life insurance (we were unaware of his diagnosis). After being assured that suicide was covered for policies in force for more than two years he went home and committed suicide a few days later. His family didn't know that he was terminal, either, until they read his note.

All of the policies paid. It was very sad.

I believe that as long as the policy isn't taken out with the intention of committing suicide that people's families should be able to collect. The two year waiting period is a good way to prevent that kind of fraud.

Nope. Most policies WILL pay, after the policy has been in force several years.

I think that the rule should be that you get some of the money but not all of it

i have heard that prudential has a clause for suicide.
they dont pay if the suicide happened within 2 years but will pay after that time.

Chris C
Most insurance companies have a suicide clause that it is an automatic denial of claim if suicide is within the first 2 years of the policy and most policies will still investigate the claim (just as any claim is investigated) and possibly deny the claim. Some companies do flat out decline it all together.

Personally, the suicide clause is a good thing, because it prevents fraudulent claims and claims like that would increase prices for other people that buy (the more claims paid out means lower profits/revenue for insurance companies which means rate increases). Allowing it after 2 years is something that is a tough call. Mental illness is something that is very serious and something that is very common so it's tough to take a hard stand to say "you don't matter", and your familiy and dependents should not suffer becuase of your poor decision, however, I do think that there is absolutely no reason to take your own life. Life is not that hard/serious where a person should be taking that drastic of a measure, so I would have no problems with seeing it as a complete exclusion period.

Yes.
Why should they pay if you kill yourself, it doesn't seem fair.
