Surely not?
My new son-in-law is a loss adjuster. He tells me that it is his job to take all insurance claims and adjust them to favour his insurance company.

Not sure what country your son-in-law works but it sounds like your new son-in-law is a real piece of work. He certainly isn't helping us honest adjusters out here at all.

Unless he is working for some fly-by-night insurance company, he really should start adjusting claims based on the policy provisions and laws of the state or country the accident occurred in.

As somebody else mentioned the fast majority of the adjusters are over-worked and don't have the time to spend trying to screw people over on what is paid or not paid on a claim.

Education is the key here for both your son-in-law and for all the folks who automatically assume all insurance companies are out to rip off everybody. The problem is that nobody reads their insurance policy and just assumes that everything is covered.

Everybody needs to remember that insurance is heavily regulated (at least in the U.S.) and adjusters would not get away with blatantly screwing people over. The fines and "bad faith" lawsuits are not worth it. Too many people have unrealistic expectations about what their policy should cover and pay.

I hope your son-in-law learns these lessons before he damages himself, his company and the public any further.

Sure there are scumbag adjusters out there who will try to get

Adjusters are too damn busy to spend much time trying to screw people around. Seriously, if they can justify to their boss the amount of money they are paying you, they are happy to do so. It means another closed claim, less work that they have to put into closing it, and just maybe making it to happy hour on time. They are salary employees, so it doesn't matter if you get paid $10 or $10 million.

Are you just naive or ignorant to life?

For starters, insurance companies are just like any other business, they do want to make money, and there is nothing wrong with them wanting to make money. Second, adjusters are working for the insurance company, the agent works for both the insurance company and the client, and the client needs to make sure that they are working with the agent.
The adjusters job is to make sure the claims are 1) legitamate claims and there is no fraud involved 2) determine that the claim being filed is of a reasonable amount of money to repair what it is that has been damaged or broken.

So in away your son-in-law is correct in telling you that his job is take all insurance claims and "adjust" them to favor his insurance company. It is up to the agent to make sure that the client is not getting the short end of the stick by arguing in favor of the client. Once the company looks at the facts then they can determine what is in the best interest for all parties involved.

he is partly right, its his job to look out for the best interest of his company, cost them as little money as possible. i sold insurance for a while. in school your taught to sell sell sell and they don't mind paying claims but they do want to pay as little as they can.they do have guide lines to go by.

Adjuster are paid to do whatever by-law they can do to get out of paying a claim.
