KJ | Surgery without insurance? |
My husband broke a bone in his hand and has to have surgery to fix it. We don't have insurance and no doctors accept payment plans. His income is to high for any kind of gov. aid and it cost $3,500. We were told he has to pay this all up front next week. Any ideas (besides asking for a loan) would be great. By the way we don't live in the county for the free hospital so that is out too. Thanks! |

A provider organization that is reputable will allow you to make pmts. However if you let them know up front you are a self pay & can pay in full (credit card, loan, etc) then it is highly possible you can negotiate a deduction on the cost of the surgery. All services are negotiable, so you need to contact the hospital and just simply ask for the area that will speak to you regarding a negotiation for the upcoming services. I work at an ins co & we call for people and negotiate prompt pay discounts. We do this when the services are out of network & no contracted discount is given on the front end. as long as pmt is made usually w/in 10 days we are allotted a discount. You need to remember costs associated w/surgery will or could also have radiology, pathology, anesthesia, the surgeon bill and the facillity bill. all the bills will be sent seperately. There is also a possibility of "assistant anesthesia CRNA " or "assistant surgeons" involved in the care and medications prescribed once you are out of the hospital. get the facts and be prepared. |

There is no fast easy answer for this. The only other option you have is medical escrow - and you have to save up enough in the account for a surgery. The benefit is that these companies use the same negotiators as the insurance companies. Little-known fact - the same surgery that a doc will charge you full-price for, the doc will accept about 1/5 the money from the insurance company because they know they are getting paid. Yeah, it sucks. I had the same situation when I needed knee surgery. Thank God my ex, who is a doc, was able to fix my knee so that I don't need surgery.
Sounds like this surgery will be done in a day surgery and not a hospital. Docs get together and open these surgery centers and they don't work with people like hospitals do. |

you don't have many options, see if the hospital can work out a plan, get a loan, or go to a US hospital and pretend you're an illegal and don't speak English. |

If you don't have $3500 in savings, I think you're going to need to ask for the loan.
But you should call the doctor and hospital, and ask them for a "cash price" for the surgery. |

Any hospital that requires you to pay up front sounds like a scam waiting to happen. Hospitals are required by law to work with patients to establish payment plans that fit into their budget, and they generally are not allowed to tack on interest. Unless the surgery is not medically necessary, I'd say this place is taking you for a ride. Move on to a more reputable medical facility. |
