Kellie | To get maturnity coverage or not? |
I am currently 29 years old and just recently married. I have come to a decision I have to make on my health insurance. I am not planning on getting pregnant for at least the next 2 years. So do I or do I not take the maturnity insurance. It would be a differance of 140.00 a month! Crazy since I am on the pill trying not to get pregnant. But it is still possible to get pregnant on the pill, but highly unlikely. So my question is do I take it to be on the safe side or waive it until it gets closer to that time. Money is tight and I hate to sink money into something I will hopefully not need. Any views on the situation would be much appreciated. Thnx. |

Check on the policy to see what the waiting period for maternity is on your policy. I have seen waiting periods ranging from 10 months to two years. Keep in mind that most insurance policies have built in increases as you get older of 20-30% per year. If you do not trust your agent to answer your questions find another agent.
You might want to considure finding a plan that is "Issue Age" that does not cover the maternity but start putting aside money for yourself to pay for normal child birth. (Like 140/month for two+ years or at least 3360 before you plan on having children) Find out what a normal child birth cost in your area if you were going to pay cash. Keep in mind that even the policies that do not cover maternity will typically cover a C-section for a female who has never had trouble giving birth since that is a medical issue involving the health of the insured.
Most insurance plans that do not cover maternity will still help you cut the cost of the services so that you will not be paying full price but have a negotated rate even for the services that are not covered. |

Since 120 a month is pretty high, I would skip it BUT consider doubling up on the protection (at the VERY least, have him pull out, though that is not a reliable form of birth control it could be somewhat effective with the pill). Like you say, it is possible to get pregnant on the pill, though not likely (as long as you use it correctly). Giving birth is NOT cheap, so keep that in mind as well when making your decision. |

I agree with you in that it's awful to have to put money into something just "in case" you need it. It's like throwing it away in a sense.
Beings that you are on birth control and not planning on getting pregnant right now, you should be okay not getting the extra coverage for maternity just yet. However, I would suggest that you start some sort of savings with as much of that extra $140 that you would be shelling out each month, only instead of paying it towards insurance that you most likely won't need yet. You can at least put it into a savings that is yours and you will have it should an emergency arise or should things not go as planned.
If worse came to worse and you were to get pregnant unexpectedly and it be too late to get the maternity coverage when you need it, there is another option that will help cut the costs so that you wouldn't be paying full out of pocket for all. It's Ameriplan and you can bookmark this site for future reference if needed. http://www.mybenefitsplus.com/cberney
Most likely you will be fine and I personally wouldn't spend an extra $140 each month for maternity just yet. When you start thinking of having kids and decide to get off the birth control, then I would recommend it.
Hopefully this helps you a bit!
Good Luck! |

I understand where you're coming from, my maternity coverage is $260 per month! Check with the insurance company to see if you can add it later. With my insurance company (BCBS) you can only add maternity coverage when you first start the policy. I'm not sure why that is, but whatever. Another option is to opt out of the maternity coverage and force yourself to put that $140 into a savings account every month. That way you're saving money, and if you accidentally get pregnant it's there to help you cover the costs of the pregnancy...since you won't be able to get insurance to cover it once you're already pregnant. Another good thing (sorry for being negative here) about putting it into a savings account rather than paying for the insurance that you're not looking to use right now is, if down the road it turns out that you decide not to have kids or can't get pregnant, you haven't thrown this money away. It's there in your savings account and you can use it for something else. Like I said, sorry to be so negative there. I'm also 29, married 1.5 years ago, dealing with infertility and keep thinking about what else I could be doing with that $3,000+ that we wasted on maternity insurance during the past year. |

You will probably not regret being on the safe side and purchasing the maternity health insurance coverage now.
Here is some more information on maternity health insurance: |
|

Insure Man
|
Maternity insurance usually has a waiting period to conceive (either three or nine months with most policies) and then another nine months to give birth.
By purchasing health insurance with a maternity rider now, you would not have to worry about waiting periods later - especially if a child was born early. Best to plan ahead.

That's always a tough one.
Take a higher deductible and get the maternity coverage. Also, look around to make sure another company isn't available the provides it automatically. That's the case in my state (MD).

You take it. You have to have it for 18 months before it kicks in, anyway. And once you're pregnant, it's too late to buy it. 9 months before you get pregnant, actually, it's too late to buy it. |
