Too much health insurance coverage?
My husband has been working with the same employer for 11 years. When he was hired the policy was: he pays 100% family insurance and after each year of service his employer would pick up 10% of the premium. 1st anniversary they pay 10% 2 anniversary they pay 20% 3rd anniversary 30% etc. Now that he has been there for over 10 years and due for full 100% employer paid premiums, they decided to change that policy and only offer it to the employee alone. After all these years of paying extra on the premiums (knowing that one day we would have full family coverage for free) they change it so that he now has to pay 100% to cover his family. Now, I also have full family benefits like the typical employee medical package. I could easily include him on my family plan and it won't cost me a penny more since it also covers my 2 children. The policy I pay is for 3 or more family members. However, he's stubborn and says that even if he never uses it, he's not letting his employer get off without paying his full policy. So, technically, he is covered by both my policy and the one with his employer. I fear that this can cause problems in the future. Can an insurance company get out of paying a claim because he is covered by another separate insurance plan? When it's time for benefit enrollments, should I see about dropping him? Should I keep it the same? Is one policy supposed to pay before the other one does? Please help.

The Coordination of Benefits Provision is designed to give insured individuals as much coverage as possible while at the same time eliminating overinsurance, by setting forth guidelines to determine which company will pay as primary insurer and which will pay as secondary insurer when a working couple (or their dependents) have a claim that's covered by more than one group insurance policy.

It states that in situations where double coverage exists, the insurer covering the employee who actually has the claim is automatically designated as the primary insurance company. The primary company must pay as much of the claim as its policy limits allow. It is not a 50/50 split as suggested by another answerer.

As far as deciding what coverage to keep just add up the cheapest way to achieve the goal of coverage for the whole family. Your husband shouldn't take it personally. When the employer agreed to fund the entire family's health insurance ten years ago the cost of health insurance was a fraction of what it is today. Lots of employers have had to cut back on coverage or even discontinued it altogether.

His company sucks to change its medical coverage, but it's legal.
Let your husband keep his own medical insurance with his company. There's no such thing as too much coverage. Not all medical insurance coverage is the same. There are some medical conditions and procedures covered by one but not the other. Keep both insurance for him. Don't drop him from yours.

Well, that's not surprising, as the average family plan costs an employer $1200 a month. The average individual plan costs the employer $350 a month.

His policy is going to be primary for him. Your policy will be secondary for him. The obvious problem, is having a big claim, and having both insurance companies point the finger at the other guy saying, "he needs to pay that, not me!".

It's probably not hurting to have him insured twice, but I'd not add him, to prevent the issues of chasing the companies down.

For your husband, his policy is the primary one, and yours becomes secondary. That means any out of pocket expenses he pays he could forward to your company for payment ( subject to copays, deductibles, etc). This is a good thing if he has a serious injury or illness.

Leave his policy alone. It costs him nothing. Keep him on yours since it doesn't cost you more for your family coverage with him on it, then leave it alone. Someday he might need your coverage, and you will be very glad to have it--either as primary coverage, if his company goes out of business ( for example) or as secondary coverage in the event he sustains a serious hospitalization.

You can't go wrong with more coverage. Also, don't be mad at the employer. Times are bad and health insurance has skyrocketed. No one has a crystal ball. No way did the employer know 10 years ago, what conditions would exist today.

Best of luck to you.

There is rarely a need to have two policies and many companies don't allow you to have other coverage.

Usually if you carry two insurance policies and you use them one insurance policy will pay half and the other will pay half. I would contact your insurance company, or if you can go and see a licensed broker one who sells policies for the company you are covered by even better. You need to sit down face to face with someone who can explain everything in layman's terms about both policies.
