The travel insurance that I normally recomend is overseas medical insurance. Normally these policy's do offer some added insurance for luggage and trip interuptions, but most importantly they offer medical insurane for those medical issues that can arise while traveling abroad. Most of the time, health insurance policys that issued in the United States have limited coverage for overseas medical issues. When you purchase Short Trip or Long Trip Overseas medical insurance you get added protection while you are in a foreign country. Things like:

Translation assistance
Emergency evacuation
Family reunion
Small deductibles are available

I recommend it for all my clients that go overseas for work or vacation.

old know all
If you have a good home insurance policy, it should cover your personal possessions anywhere in the world. Having travel insurance won't get you any more money - they'll just pay half the claim each. The main purpose of travel insurance is to cover cancellation costs and medical expenses.

Travel insurance has more fraudulent claims than any other form of insurance. If stuff gets lost, damged or stolen, they'll want you to prove that actually had the stuff you are claiming for and that you reported its loss to the local police. They also have a getout clause if you leave your luggage unattended - even if this is in the hotel baggage room. However, they do pay out if you can jump through all the hoops.

My friend planned a trip to Spain. She took out travel insurance and made all of her arrangements. I said travel insurance was a wasted expense, but I was wrong, An emergency made her cancel her trip and she got complete refunds except for ( I think) 20 dollars. I think however that you are thinking of a different kind of insurance that will cover your stuff.

Let me tell you what travel ins is all about.
Several years ago, my father and his girl friend were going to Disneyland for a vacation. They had everything booked and paid for it.
Three weeks before departure, my father was diagnosed with cancer. He called to cancel the vacation and see if any of his money could be refunded.
They travel agent told my dad to have the dr.write them a letter stating he had cancer and should not travel. He did, the dr sent the letter, and in 10 days he had a full refund, except for the cost of the insurance.
THIS is what travel ins is for. Travel ins is not a big con.

I won't try to squeeze in what happened to my daughter's father in law, but there, the tvl ins paid out over $ 100,000.00.

Will it cover your phone and designer clothes? Who knows. Call the agent.

welcome news
The most important part of travel insurance is the medical insurance aspect where, as you can see from other comments, large amounts can be paid out. Anyone going abroad without travel insurance for medical expenses is mad.

With regards to your designer clothes and sunglasses, most travel insurance policies cover personal effects/ bagagge BUT the cover is indemnity (i.e. a deduction will be made for wear and tear) and there are policy limits on the total cover provided e.g. £1,500 and , more importantly, on any single article - probably £200 - £250. Furthermore travel insurers are naturally a bit cheesed off with fraudulent claims for designer clothes and sunglasses rolex watches etc so insist on seeing proof of purchase in many cases as well as making sure that you report the incident to the local police.

Your best bet is to ensure that you have all-risks cover extension on your house contents insurance policy where higher single article limits apply as does new for old in most cases.

In summary - travel insurance personal effects section is basically covering your clothes and suitcases on your trip. And they will pay out under the terms of the policy providing that you can proove your loss to them.

With two weeks cover to Europe costing £15 - £20 and providing £10,000,000 medical cover, travel insurance is remarkably good value for money.

It all depends on what the terms and conditions are on the contract between you and the provider. If you read through them before you go and then make a plan of action if something gets stolen and "do everything by the book" so to speak then legally as you have kept your side of the bargain they will have to pay out.

The problem with designer stuff is that they may not give you the full amount that you paid for them in the shop. This is something you should discuss with your insurance provider on what is the excess and also what is the maximum payout you can have if something does get stolen!

insane_mad_maniak
to get a full coverage of everythink would probabyl cost more then the stuff is worth! and most companies hate paying out.
