I'm Hare! | Uninsured C Section - how do you get the bill discounted and avoid collections? |
I was talking to a recently married first time parents couple who find themselves facing a near 18,000 medical expense for their first born daughter who is worth every penny but the bills come out to 450 dollars a month over five years. The anesthesiologist alone is near 4,000 and because this is a separate bill from the hospital and the surgeon and the obgyn each person seems to have to agree to whatever has to be done or none of them will agree to what has to be done. So what advice do we have for these first time parents as they are stuck with two houses while one will not sell and they still have no insurance and it is time for the baby to receive her shots. |

They ask the hospital to give them a cash discount for their services. And they ask the doctors to do the same. The hospitals and doctors are separate entities, and therefore could potentially offer different discounts on the bills. But quite likely they will all discount their fees at least a little bit for a cash paying patient.
If this has already been done, then there isn't a whole lot else they can do other than pay the bills. (Or go into default on the bills, at which point they would be sent to collections and likely taken to court over the expenses. Not a great option either, so I'd avoid it if possible. But, if it comes down to putting food on the table for the month or paying the doctor's bill that month, what else can you do?)
They should also look into getting the baby covered by Medicaid or the CHIP plan in their state. Even if the family doesn't qualify for the state welfare insurance, the baby might be eligible for coverage by herself. That would help with the expense of well-baby care and immunizations. (If they can't get the baby covered by the state, I would suggest getting the immunizations done at the local health department. The expense would be cheaper through the health department than at a doctor's office.) |

Ask them to give you the rate of what the regular insurance companies give them.
Insurance companies usually get at least a 10% discount from normal charges.
That might be the best they can do.
You will be able to pay in payments. The hospital wanted to pay up in one year. But it took 2 years for me to pay. You have to make sure that you pay each and every month (never miss one payment). An effort to pay will keep you out of collections.

Medicaid is the first choice. They may or may not qualify with two houses depending on the state. Google medicaid+their state to find the site and verify eligibility guidelines in that state..
Next, most medical providers will offer cash discounted rates, although usually, they want that paid prior to delivery-but ask. They do not all have to agree to discount their fee in order to grant one.
Contrary to popular belief, medical providers do not have to accept whatever you can pay monthly and can turn over the account to collections if they wish. So, the earlier you get this agreement in place, the better.
Newborn immunizations are availabel at the county health clinics for a greatly reduced fee (if not free). |

See a social worker to see if your child qualifies for welfare health care, the shots should be covered. You can at least find a cheap clinic.
You can only avoid collections by paying your bills. No one ends up in collections against their will. The hospital should be able to work out a payment plan.
I doubt you will convince many people to reduce their pay to increase your household income. You are asking them to take from their families to benefit yours. Would you be willing to work for less pay to help your boss have more money? This is basically what you are asking. You made the choice to not get insurance and to have a child, this is exactly what you wanted, to pay your own health care. |

Well, clearly, they spent too much. They'll have to lower the price of the one they're trying to sell. If it won't sell, then the price is too high. It might COST them, to sell the house. You should NEVER buy a second house before the first one sells.
They can likely get those bills repriced down to under $8,000, by calling, and asking for the bills to be repriced. Of course, if they've already agreed to pay the $18K, then they aren't as likely to get the discounts.
The BEST advice for these first time parents, is to get health insurance, BEFORE buying houses. And see if the health department gives discounted immunizations. |
