Urgent question about medical insurance for college students!!!???
I'm a student at a major university in the state of Washington (not that it matters for the question I guess).

I'm still on my dad's insurance but it's going to expire on my birthday this year.
If it is verified that I'm a student at a college (I don't think it matters whether it's a university, community college, trade school, whatever), then the insurance can continue.

I stupidly dropped a class close to the beginning of this term, and this unknowingly dropped me *just*, just barely to the status of 'half-time'. I really didn't realize this would happen and has caused me all sorts of grief with the financial aid gods (lol)...I already will have to be writing appeal letters explaining my mistake.

Well, I digress, but my question is: For this insurance matter, do I just need to be a "student" or do I need to be a "full-time student".

If it's the latter, pardon my French, but I'm pretty much, f**ked, aren't I?

Anyone know the answer?

I can only answer from knowledge for California, but the guidelines are the same....

To qualify as an overage dependent under your parents medical policy, insurance companies require that you maintain a "full-time student status" (normally 12 units). If you inadvertently dropped a class this semester, just enroll in the next one (spring). When you do this, its no-harm, no-foul and you will be able to stay on your current insurance.

If your carrier drops you now, you can elect to enroll in COBRA (a continuation of medical insurance that you or your parents will pay), stay on COBRA until you pick you units back up, re-enroll as a qualified dependent and voila, you're done.

You will be able to stay on your parents plan as a f/t student usually until your 24th or 25th birthday.

I would also suggest that you contact your parents insurance broker who will really be able to help you and to make sure that you remain compliant with your insurer.

At least 12 credit hours.

And I can pretty much guarantee you that the insurer will make no exceptions to that...if they made an exception for you, then they'd have to make an exception for everyone. Not going to happen.

On the bright side, once you enroll in 12 credit hours again, you can be re-added. Just provide the documentation. So, it might be a pretty short period that you're without coverage, depending on when your birthday falls...as long as you enroll in at least 12 credit hours at the beginning of the next term.

I am a school nurse. Our school (well, university)'s student health clinic sees all our students regardless of the insurance status. The visits are free, but they may pay, at cost, the medications, and lab, etc.

The students here had the option of buying school's insurance (Blue Cross, I think), and it's about $100 a month.
You need to go to the student clinic ASAP (today?) and get one of their brochures and call the toll free number to see if you can go on the plan if that is what you need to do. Or the business office should have one.

I think you assume correctly that you need to be a full time student to continue your father's insurance plan. Can you sign up for more classes now?

I am sorry I have not been very helpful, but if you are ill, you should be able to be seen at school no matter what insurance you have.

Most of the time, you need to be a full time student. See if it's too late to enroll ANYWHERE, for an online class. Otherwise, you're, as you say, speaking French.

Whether or not you're eligible for the student health care plan depends on your school; you'll need to check with them.
Your other options:
Temporary health insurance coverage
Individual health plan bought separately
Exercise the COBRA option under your dad's insurance policy (paying the additional premium for up to 36 months)
Take a full or part-time job that offers health insurance (I hear
Starbucks offers insurance to part-timers)

Good luck

Talk to your school about their insurance options...most offer some form of student insurance. For your dad's insurance, it depends on the policy but most require you to be full-time and under 24.
