WHY won't insurance companies sell health insurance to a woman who is already pregnant?
She may break a leg or get bronchitis, which would have nothing to do with being pregnant. Am I wrong, is there a company who would sell to her before the baby is born, as long as she understood that nothing to do with the maternity would be covered?

The short answer - its still too much of a financial risk.

Most states mandate that "complications of pregnancy" be covered under a health insurance policy. If you experienced any of those specific complications, the insurer would be on the hook for the bill.

Because here in the USA, your chance of a C section is about 40%, and the health insurance company would have to pay for it.

Also, it's not common, but it's possible, for the woman to develop complications, and even die.

The health carrier can't exclude coverage for the c section, or stroke, or diabetes, or any other "complication" that's not direct childbirth or prenatal care. So they don't sell you ANY health insurance.

See, the government made the rule that they had to cover that stuff, if they wrote the policy. So, they responded by refusing to write policies. Government interference tends to have the exact opposite effect of it's stated intent. Prime example here.

Most companies wont sell insurance to an expectant father! Newborns are a risk, and most states require insurance companies to provide coverage to the dependent newborn of the insured from the moment of birth. See mandatory coverage link below.

after 6 months evn the pre-existing condition in your state may have to be covered---- so they may have to pay for the baby as well as you in the hospital!

Diana
It's called a pre-existing condition. Most plans also have what's called a "maternity rider". An even more strict form of a pre-existing condition clause.

No offense, but situations like this is why healthcare costs are on the rise. No one thinks about getting health insurance until there's a problem that takes them to the doctor.

Keep shopping around, you may get lucky. If not, try to qualify for Medicaid... but don't fudge your information, like your income, to get on it. If you still can't get on health insurance, start saving your pennies for a rainy day... because it will pour!

The simplest reason is that they don't want to pay for the pregnancy itself. It can cost $5,000-$10,000 just for the delivery of the child and collecting a $100-$200 a month premium certainly doesn't justify the risk.

AND, even if the policy doesn't cover maternity I can tell you from personal experience of many trips to the emergency room for dehydration. There's also gestational diabetes and a whole laundry list of items that can occur.

To be blunt, the insurance company doesn't want to cover a pregnant person for the same reasons that the pregnant person wants insurance -- the added risk.

Most states have a high risk plan that may cover it. Good luck.

A lot of things can happen during a pregnancy, for which an insurance company doesn't want to risk.

Think about it. If you were the insurance company, would you take the risk?

Trying to buy insurance at time of need is like trying to buy fire insurance when your house is already in flames.

People need to plan ahead for the unexpected.

Best wishes, and God bless.

same reason that an insurance company won't insure your HOUSE if the kitchen is on fire.

Good luck and I hope this helps!
