Hmm, really depends on what you're looking for in an insurance company. If all you insure is your autos and you file a claim once every 10 years (20 for me) than maybe insurance is really a commodity and it doesn't matter where you get it.
Now back in the day when there were still tele-marketers, I'd get calls from insurance people wanting to lower my car rate, so I'd tell them sure, BTW quote my umbrella, home, four rental properties, cabin and life insurance too. Now at this point, the Gecko, the cartoon chick and AIG (in Ohio) would hang up. So, determine what you need, an insurance professional who'll work with you, or an 800 number that will do policy maintenance.
Back to you question, USAA, Sentry, Chubb (if your rich), Westfield, even Erie have good reps as all-around insurers. Get a referral to a good established agent in your area and shop around. |

I'd suggest talking to your own agent first to see if you are missing any discounts and if theres anything else you can do to save money. Rates are pretty close no matter where you go. Also its not worth saving an extra 15% if you trade it for crappy customer service, even if they have a cute lizard as a spokes person. |

A couple of years ago, I shopped around and did best with AAA, but I recently rechecked it and did better by combining all my insurance with Allstate. So, it's hard to do, but it's best to spend an hour on the phone with three different agents and see what you can do. |

I gots quotes from a bunch of them about 2 years ago. Geico, Progressive, Mercury, Allstate, State Farm, etc. Probably 10 in all.
Only 1 had a price quote substantially better then the others, and that was Costco. Yup, the warehouse club. If you are a member of a warehouse club, go to their web site and look under services and get a quote.
Costco saved me $400 more per year then any other insurance co for the same coverage. |

You can always save money by switching insurance companies depending on your risk characteristics. I save State Farm customers $300 - 600 per year in my area on their homes and the auto is a wash. If I could advertise to Allstate customers to shop at my agency, I save them closer to $1,000 on home and more on their auto insurance regularly. Insurance is about more than price. It is about loyalty. As an agent, I am there for all my customers around the clock. We had tornados go through and my customers called me at home - not the 800# for claims first because I take care of them. It is not always about price but I do what I can to keep their insurance as low as I can with the companies available to me. I was also the one who brought them bottled water, food, and helped organize clean up after the storm with local churches and service organizations. I did not see Geico, Progressive, State Farm, or other Agents out there but my company was out there pulling tree branches off cars and helping folks gather what we could of their personal belongings after the storm. |
