waterdog | What's the difference between comprehensive car insurance and liability? |
|

In car insurance, comprehensive coverage is that which pays to repair or replace the policy owner's vehicle and personal property inside of it if it was damaged or lost due to covered perils, such as fire, theft, flood, or vandalism.
Liability is an obligation that legally binds an individual to settle a debt. When one is liable for a debt, they are responsible for paying the debt or settling a wrongful act they may have committed. For example, if John hits Jane's car, John is liable for the damages to Jane's vehicle because John is responsible for the damages.
Or, in simple terms comprehensive covers damages that occur to your car when the vehicle is not being driven - unless you hit an animal while driving.
Liability covers the people that you hit & does not pay for your medical or car repairs.
A qualified insurance agent has the job of letting people know if they need liability or comprehensive coverage. I would suggest going to InsureMe at: http://www.insureme.com/landing.aspx?Refby=614498&Type=auto. It’s a web site that offers insurance information & information on policies nationwide. It also gives you the option to call local agents to get any of your questions answered. This service is 100% free and you are not obligated to buy anything. It is simply a way to get insurance information and be able to instantly compare rates in your area to find the best price/coverage.

Comprehensive is one physical damage coverage (it pays YOU for damage to your car), which usually means things that happen to your car like hitting an animal, fire, theft, vandalism, broken glass. It will show up as ONE line on your policy. It does NOT mean, "all coverage".
Liability coverage protects YOU if you cause an accident. It pays someone else when you cause the accident. There are several coverages included in it which will all show up as seperate lines on your policy, including bodily injury (when you or your car injure other people), property damage (when your car hits another car, or a bike, or a house), uninsured motorist coverage (when you are hit by someone with no insurance, or hit & run), underinsured motorist coverage (when you are hit by someone with some insurance, but not enough to cover your injuries). Some policies combine bodily injury and property damage into a "combined single limit".
Hope that helps. |

Liability insurance pays for damages you cause to third parties if you are liable. It consists only of Property Damage and Liability. Uninsured Motorist and Underinsured are first party coverages, and therefore not considered as part of Liability.
Comprehensive is a coverage you have to buy that covers your vehicle when damaged by a covered peril (flood, fire, theft, vandalism, striking an animal, falling objects, hail, wind, you get the picture). It is for things that happen to your car "other than collision". Comprehensive coverage, in the mainstream, does not cover other third party damages. Most policies define it as damage to your covered auto. |

Mbrcatz has the majority of the answer covered. I would just add that comprehensive covers specifically covered situations, whereas collision covers collision with another vehicle or object. Comprehensive coverage varies from carrier to carrier, depending upon what policy they use. |

Comprehensive pays you whether or not an accident was your fault, and liability only pays the other person when you are at fault (your on your own for damage to your own car if you caused it). |

Liability coverage for the others (Bodily Property) cause by you or your vehicle.
Comprehensive coverage for your vehicle damage by Theft, Vandalism, Natural disaster - Hail, Tornado, Fire, Collision with an animal or Falling object. Sometimes it is called "Other than Collision coverage"
I learned from the following site;
http://www.insureme.com/landing.aspx?Refby=614133&Type=auto
If you have more questions on auto insurance, you may asked the licensed agents from this site;
It is not cost you at all. |

Liability takes care of those you hurt. Comprehensive takes care of bad things that happen to your car, like theft. |

Actually Cmprehensive covers you, your vehicle and third party while liability or 3rd party liability as the name suggests covers third party liability alone |
