Every New Jersey resident is guaranteed the right to buy health insurance. You cannot be discriminated against because of your health status or age. However, a pre-existing condition waiting period may be imposed on you for up to 12 months if you let your health insurance lapse for more than 31 days. You should always make sure you have continous health insurance coverage in order to avoid such a waiting period.

You should check with your school. Most universities offer insurance and/or healthcare at a student center. You may qualify for medicaid in your state, or you could go to a county medical clinic that will offer care at an ability to pay level. |

NJ Care. It is NJ version of medicaide, and it is very good. The only downside is that you generally have to be uninsured for 3 months to qualifhy. |

It doesn't matter if you have no income, so long as you can pay the premium. You should call an insurance agent to get a quote. You can get a short term medical policy ( good for a year or less) a personal permanent health insurance policy ( probably cost around $200 per month-maybe a little less, depending on your deductible and co-insurance) or you can purchase a policy through your school. All colleges and universities offer policies. They are limited, but better than what you have now. You can't afford to be without coverage. Best of luck to you. |
