What are 7 reasons wy health care insurance cost escalates?

~♠♥CJ♥♠~
The main reason is to keep up with the rapidly rising cost of health care. Insurance fraud more than likely plays a role in it too. Also, new technologies raise the cost of heath care, which in turn raise insurance costs.

Inefficiency of the overall health care system definitely contributes to the escalation of insurance cost. For example, health insurance companies require each contracted medical group/hospital to have a certain number of expensive medical equipment (such as MRI's). This of course means that there are many expensive machines that are not being used to their fullest capacity. Did you know there are more MRI's in Orange County, California than there are in the whole country of Canada?

I know that's not exactly seven, but I would like to point out one more thing. Mohan is definitely onto something. The CEO of United Heathcare has been a poster child for excessive executive compensation for the past few years. Don't you think it's a little naive to believe that the deep pockets of greedy executives have nothing to do with rising health insurance costs?

1. underinsured - those people w/out insurance that obtain free health care. we all pay for that.
2. over utilization - those people that run to the ER for a papercut
3. inflation - doctors rates go up
4. new and improved technology - there are always new services and treatments
5. people are less and less healthy due to smoking, obesity etc. these are all behavioral conditions.
6. advertisement of drugs - everyone wants to pop a pill rather than try to help themselves the old fashion way. exapmle, if you have high cholesteral - hold the bacon.
7. people do not take advantage of the different programs that most insurance companies offer like nurselines and case management.

by far the biggest contendor is the utilization. nowadays most people go running to the doctor or hospital. this is why most employers that offer health insurance are starting to put some of the financial burden on the employees by offering plans w/ high deductibles.

Mohan - you need to read up on this if you think that your answer is accurate. i work in health insurance, and guess what, i'm not counting my $ every night. this is one of the things in life that everyone should try to undertand and it is the ignorant people like you that feel that everything should be free.

I don't know if there's seven reasons, but let's see what I come up with.

1. Insurance fraud.

2. Doctor shopping. (These are people who, if they don't like what one doctor says to them, they will see any other doctor under the sun until they find one who tells them what they want to hear. Most commonly used by hypochondriacs or people in poor health that are in denial.)

3. Doctors who blindly prescribe unnecessary drugs (hello! MRSA!) or order every test under the sun to make a simple diagnosis. (The more procedures they perform on a patient = the more money the doctor makes)

4. A good many "suits" at insurance companies giving themselves six-figure bonuses. (It happens.)

Well. Those are the four big ones. I can't think of another three. I know everyone's quick to blame overweight people or smokers, but the truth is, they're NOT the only ones to blame. Those that have abused the system for so long are the ones to blame. I know of someone, with Medicaid, who went to the Emergency Room to learn more about her child's heart murmur. That's abusive. There are also people who collect Medicaid but drive around in $70,000 cars. That's also abusive to the whole system.
