ways i can save on insurance? im 16yrs old so i know that alone makes my insurance sky high, but i heard if you have items such as a fire extinguisher in your car, it can save you money on insurance, is this true? What are other things like this that i can do? any inexpensive security features that will get me discounts? Also, any suggestions for insurance companies?

take driving classes, don't buy a sports car, don't buy a red car, get good grades in school, day time running lights, and a car alarm all reduce the cost of insurance. if you can get under your parents insurance company that should reduce your rate also.

The best thing you can do is talk to a few insurance companies. Check the cover that they have and the benefits. Then check the things that make a difference.

All companies are NOT created equal, and "cheap" might mean "no cover" when push comes to shove.

But by all means, companies put things in place to help encourage safe driving and lower risk. The only way you'll know for sure is if you ask the companies you're looking at what extra things (besides zip code, age and type of cover) factor into their premiums.

No, a fire extinguisher in your car will not get you a discount.

Some companies might give a discount for a safe driving course. Also, if your car is parked in a garage rather than on the street, it will lower the rates a bit.

Nope, that fire extinguisher is wishful thinking.

At 16, there's not going to be anything you can do to SIGNIFICANTLY save you money. Even drivers ed only saves you the cost of the class, over three years.

The best you can do, is buy a car at least six years old, pay cash for it, and only carry liability coverage. That way, if you crack it up, there's no coverage, but that's the most expensive part of insurance for you.

Fire extinguisher? No. That's ridiculous. Anti-Lock brakes and a car alarm do help though.

My parents' insurance company (Liberty Mutual) gave a pretty hefty discount if you got good (B average or better) grades. Drivers' Ed helps too.

If you can, try to be on your parents' insurance. It is cheaper than being on your own, and then when you do go on your own that helps bring your premium down because you have "insurance history". From April to October I was on my parents' insurance (Liberty Mutual) and I was paying the equivalent of $1400 per year.

Do not go for State Farm, especially if you just got your license, they wanted $5 grand a year out of me back in April when I got mine. When I went off my parents insurance in October, Geico wanted about the same, despite the fact I had 6 months experience.

I have AIG now, and I'm paying $175 per month for insurance. I don't have collision insurance though, just liability. They've been great so far, and they were the cheapest people around for me.

If you can stay on your parents policy it is probably your best savings, You can have your own policy in the household, but you would be receiving a multi-car, Multi-policy ( auto / home) discount. Credit is usual tide into rates also so with that being said you probably haven't established credit yet so no discount there. If you are in school try to get a B or higher average. The vehicle that you drive will impact rates. If you drive a little older car and only have liability coverage it will cost you a lot less then have a newer car that has to have comp and collision or full coverage. Good Luck
