Dylan L | What are some good insurance companies? |
one that will be pretty cheap for a sixteen year old male |

In the US, I believe 18 is the youngest age of majority. Therefore, regardless of company, none will give you a policy.
None will be cheap either, traditionally 16yr males are some of the most prone to wrecking. 80yr olds in general are 2nd most prone. |

There is no "good" insurance companies out there that I am aware of. Reality of the matter is this. All insurance companies charge way too much in premiums for too little coverage. Most declaration pages list what coverage you have but then there is twenty or more pages of exclusions. The way the policy is worded will get you also. Insurance companies have hoards of lawyers write those policies terms forthem in ways to confuse and allow them to screw you out of as much claim money you might be submitting a claim for. they will calculate those payments in ways that are beneficial to them and cost you in ways and in amounts you will find reprehensible and appaling. Take for instance depreciation, then your deductible, then the different ways they put those numbers into their calculations of your claim. Trust me, insurance companies are there to take your money and pay out as little as possible. They always cry and whine about having to actually pay out once in a while, but that is their own fault when you can get a job done via insurance claim or on your own dime and get two very different sized amounts from the same companies on their bids. In fact where I live the company doing work will ask you if this is being done on an insurance claim. If so the bid is about 40% higher. Thank your lawmakers for these and other fine consumer ripoffs via regulation and market manipulation. Like electric and phone de-regulation after being regulated. Both times the change has done nothing except increase rates by astronomical proportions. Thank you elected officials for making life so hard and unaffordable! OK a good insurance company would be one that pays claims and has low premiums and no deductibles or depreciation. If you find one let us all know the name. |

I disagree with the person that complained about State Farm. They are excellent at paying their claims. Maybe California is a better state than others, I don't know.
All insurance companies get red flags that a claim may be fraud. It that is the case, then yes, it goes to a special investigative unit. That helps catch bad guys and keeps your premiums down. Not all claims are investigated, only the ones that have some red flags, and usually those are thefts. If you just cooperate with the insurance company they usually find everything checks out ok.
Call around and ask some auto body shops in your area which companies pay their claims the best. They will tell you. |

I cannot speak too much regarding premiums, but I know that in my experience, GEICO always seems to be the cheapest. I have great knowledge regarding how companies pay claims. On the lowest side is State Farm. No matter what you do, you cannot insure yourself with State Farm because it is tantamount to having no insurance at all. If there is any significant claim it will always be investigated as fraudulent. They will require that you submit to an Examination Under Oath before paying, and then for no-fault bills (medical), they will accuse the doctors of violating various laws and not being eligible for payment. In fact, most doctors will not treat you if you have State Farm. Then, you have allstate. They are very good about paying 1st party claims (claims by the insured), but fight paying claims for 3rd party liability (liability to other drivers).
Then you have the middle of the road companies that usually pay, but sometimes fight. They are really looking just to negotiate what they have to pay. These companies are Liberty Mutual, Travelers, and just about any company not mentioned elsewhere.
Then you have companies that pay all claims unless there is a good reason not to. GEICO is on the border between the last category and this. Chubb is probably the best at paying.
Overall, I am a GEICO fan b/c they are usually justified when they deny a claim and are relatively cheap on premiums.
Oh and to cars 253 who states that State Farm is good, I have litigated over 10,000 insurance claims and I spend about 1/2 my time dealing with State Farm issues. State Farm is less than 20% of my claims. They find a red flag on every claim. I cannot recall the last SF case that I had where they did not allege fraud. This is the same company that got hit for a huge putative damage award after Katrina b/c they sent engineers to look at damaged homes. When they concluded that the source of the damage was covered, they tossed the reports and sent out another engineer that said that the damage was flood damage and not covered. |
