So far the best proven way is to put the consumer in control of the health spending.
When the third party insurer pays and the consumer (policyholder) doesn't really know the true cost, they have no incentive to find ways to lower costs.
But if the consumer has to pay from their own cash account like in a Health Savings Account (HSA), they pay A LOT more attention to costs.
As they make smarter choices in the marketplace, true competiton enters the market and costs will come down. |

Quit letting your doctor find ways to bill your insurance for things your insurance shouldn't pay for. As an example, I had several chemical peels when I was 30. My doctor prescribed it to threat my severe acne, which was not really severe. I did have a fresher, younger complexion afterwards, but I see now where it contributes to the cost of health insurance. |

Cost is determined by supply and demand so there are basically 2 ways to decrease the cost, increase the supply and lower the demand:
Some ideas on increasing supply:
Encourage students to enter a medical field.
Subsidize medical school students.
Offload more medical services to lower paid people.
Some ideas on decreasing demand:
Better health education.
Incentives to stay in shape (e.g. lower health care premiums for maintaining healthy weight, not smoking, etc.)
Free/low cost exercise facilities, health coaches, etc.
More emphasis on getting and staying healthy instead of treating people after they get sick. |

san francisco is actually trying to pass a law that gives universal health care to all residents. businesses and the city will pay for the cost.
the thinking says that if everyone is insured it will actually drive cost down.

Request your employer to negotiate with the medical providers to charge reasonable rates. Also, employers can pay the insurance premiums and this act of generosity will certainly make the employees happy. |
