MommyofTwo | What can my husband do? |
My husband works for AllState and the agent he works under refuses to send out flyers or mailings. He expects him to make "cold calls" all day (while most people are at work) and still generate business. My husband is ready to make some money but how can he get his boss to generate more business by sending out flyers or something. Anybody have an ideas on how we can get my husbands name out there to have people get free quotes without putting money out of our pocket. I mean AllState gives his boss so much to generate business/advertise he is just greedy and won't use it. How can we advertise on our own. Anybody with any ideas, please??? |

The point of hiring a sales guy, is to have the sales guy do cold calls, be the creative person to drum up the leads.
Fliers and billboards and mailings don't WORK, in my experience. You don't even break EVEN on them.
Your hubby could do free "classes" at the local library, and hand out business cards. Or he can start knocking on doors. Or cold calling.
Sales is HARD. Most people wash out. |

He could call on local companies and talk to the hr manager and ask them if they will allow him to come in and talk to their employees about what allstate can offer their employees. If he can do on-the-spot quotes, even better. |

Sponsor a kids baseball or soccer team
You can do an email campaign, but be careful on how frequently you do it, and how it is worded. it will be spam for most people, but you may get some success.
Put your business cards in public places. Some grocery stores, car washes....etc have business card holders.
Put up a website with an emphasis on insurance in your local area. Some people try to work with local insurance reps, and if you work your website right, it will come up toward the top when you google insurance in your area. |

As already stated, you assume that fliers are going to be more effective than cold calls. They won't. They just end up in the circle file.
Your husband is going to learn that the life of an insurance agent is very tough at the beginning. For him to be successful, he has to understand that this is not an 8-5 job. He has to be available at all hours to build up his business. If he isn't willing to do this, he should get out now.
Next, insurance is about contacts. He needs to get out and meet people. Day and night. He needs to have boxes of business cards with him, and network. Give people his card, write his personal phone number on it, and ask for the chance to quote their business. If he doesn't like to 'shoot the bull' with people, he should get out now.
It is very difficult to make it as an agent sitting behind a desk. You have to be willing to work long hours and enjoy talking to people, because many of them will talk your ear off. If you can make it past the 5 year mark, you got a chance. |

Have business cards printed up and start handing them out. I would look into moving to a different AllState office if possible or working for a different insurance company. |

Your husband should talk to his bosses boss and get reassigned to another agent, one who is willing to spend some money to make money. Or start looking for another insur. company that will support and encourage your husband. |

Have your husband call or visit local businesses during the day. Most small businesses are always looking to save money on their insurance. Allstate also offers some nice Accident policies for employees that are very competitive with AFLAC. We call it duck hunting and it really boosts our sales.
I have very little success with flyers, but mailings I get around a 1% call back and close about 2/3 of those. It's expensive and takes time to actually get responses from them so many agents are reluctant to spend their resources to do it effectively.
If the boss is that unwilling to help his producer's than I would start thinking about finding a new agent to work for. |

Fliers and ads are expensive and will generate about the same amount of business as your cold-calling. Yellow pages (if you're not doing that already) are a little better but very costly. The people who call you through these are the dregs, the cast offs and the people with insurance problems. Not your target market base.
The best thing I can recommend is get out the door and find some customers. Go to Realtor meetings and get to know the movers and shakers in the area. Same for loan officer meetings, bank loan officer meetings, chamber of commerce, local real estate investors groups etc. Offer to do seminars on property insurance. Bring donuts; they'll go a long way.
Also, look into joining or starting a leads based group. Where I'm at we have AMSPIRIT. Find what's in your area, team with local sales professionals and trade leads. An active group can generate lots of business.
If hubby is sitting in an office talking on the phone, he's only marginally better than some 800 number or a web site. Go out, meet the people and SHOW them your value.
When you get good at this you can ditch Allstate for a better company. |

Your assumption is that fliers are more effective than cold-calling. They mostly just increase awareness which all those TV ads seem to be doing pretty well right now. That's Allstate's stand.
He can make his cold-calling more effective by learning what niches Allstate is most competitive at and sorting the list by industry/ risk. Good luck. |

Your husband needs to be very careful of compliance issues. If he designs a flyer without having the legal dept of his company clear it, he is asking for trouble. Insurance is a very technical business and you need to be very careful what you say. If he chooses to do this on his own, it is entirely possible that he could get fired or worse, sued! Cold calling can be very effective if done correctly, also being active in the community & meeting people. He is probably best to stick with what he is doing or find another job if he is that unhappy. |
