Silver M | What deductible should I get on my home insurance? ? |
My friend says I should get a 2500.00 deductible and only use it for emergencies. He said if I get a small deductible and use it for non emergency stuff that my premiums would go up alot. He says he saves that extra money in premiums in case he ever gets something small to fix and that in the last ten years he has never had anything happen. I just worry that I might have something happen. I hate insurance and think it's a rip off for most people. |

I used to sell home and auto insurance and while I am not a fan of paying for something that is intangible... I remember being able to say... it's covered and knowing how much relief that brought to people. Here is how I tried to determine a deductible. Ask yourself what kinds of things can happen to your home. Tornado's or fires, floods, wind damage... Now, how much cash do you have easily accessible? Do you have a savings account with $2,500.00 in it? If your home were damaged by fire would you be able to put that money forward towards the damage? For the smaller types of damage you can often have a glass deductible for instance... if a window is broken, you might pay, say, 50.00 of a 400.00 repair bill. instead of the entire cost... as you would with a 2500.00 ded. Whatever you decide, don't go with the cheapest coverage based on that alone... a reputable company will go over your coverages until you understand them. When you know what you are paying for, and what the limits are, and exactly what is covered, it does not feel so much like a rip off.
Things you will want to ask, do you have replacement coverage on both structure and contents? What are your personal liability limits if someone is hurt on your property? And if you operate any home based business be sure and tell your agent so you can be protected. |

Your friend is correct. |

Your friend is correct. You should take the price break and not put in small claims. You should save a claim for something large which is whatever you can not afford. By putting in a small claim you will lose a claims free discount for 3-5 years which would have been the amount you would have paid for that claim instead of the insurance company paying for it.
Be smart and listen to your friend. Insurance is not a rip off. It really does cover a lot of stuff. But you want to save it for an emergency or something too big for you to handle. |

Haha ... have you ever had a hail storm where you live? I find your friend's comments curious. Hail storms can cause a lot of damage ... yes, something like hail. Caused $7,000 in damage to my house.
Get the deductible you're comfortable with paying should something happen, like say ... an errant or drunk driver ride into the side of your house and wake you up one night. Don't let someone else's idea of insurance get you into a financial mistake.
Talk with an insurance agent where you live and share your concerns. They can address them and get the policy that's best for you if you're honest enough to tell them you don't want to spend a lot in premiums and don't want to waste money. You will be surprised ... they are not all out to make a fast buck on a policy. |

If you don't like insurance , take the highest deductible. I think it is 3% which is above $2,500.. |

He could be right and he could be wrong. What you need to do is find out the difference between a $2,500 ded and one you are more comfortable with. If there is only a $100 difference between a $2,500 and say a $500 ded then it's probably not worth it. It would take 20 yrs to make up the difference. |

sounds like you need to do some comparison shopping and sit down with an agent and decide which deductible and policy will be right for you and if a high deductible is what you choose be sure to SAVE that extra money, it can be hard to remember to do that. |
