What do people do when they have no life insurance?
My uncle has cancer so they won't give him life insurance and he's slowly dying, sad to say and I know it's awful to think about this but he has no life insurance, he was in the army for years but according to him he doesn't have any from them it's void when you get out, well, it's exspensive to have a funeral and get a casket and when he pass's I don't think any one can afford to pay for it all....I know your thinking talk to the family and split it up...well, we have a crazy family...any other suggestions...is there like any help that I don't know of...you know how they have grants and such for school and food stamps and such for low income people is there any life insurance you know of who will except people with cancer,,any suggestions?..thanks...

if he is a veteran then thet will be pay for his funeral call go to the va website and ask for help look up the faq's to help find out what benefits he may have it varies from what years they served

I have been free and clear of cancer for 3 years no one really wants to insure me. With active cancer you do not stand much chance. What you can do is contact his military branch and see if he qualifies for a veterans funeral.
"The Department of Defense (DOD) is responsible for providing military funeral honors. "Honoring Those Who Served” is the title of the DOD program for providing dignified military funeral honors to veterans who have defended our nation" This maybe just what you need, a local VFW am vets or other group may be able to help also.
If this is not a possibility, you may be able to have a benefit to help provide for his expenses. You could look into a funeral preplan. You may wish to talk to him about his feeling about burial or cremation. When my friend passed he was viewed at home for a brief period after death, cremated and the family held a nice memorial service after, this held expenses to a minimum because there was no rental of casket or anything. I know this is a terribly hard thing to handle and I commend you for it. Really try the VA and the army and the veterans groups and see what they can help with, and if need be try a fund raiser to help with providing for his wishes. Also see if there is a local Hospice group, they can be of great help in so many ways, both of you could probably use the support.

The county will bury him.It is a small plain casket but it will work. Or you can have him cremated ,much cheaper.

I know this sounds strange, but check with your county/city/state about a pauper's funeral. It DOES exist- I don't know what is involved but you may have to use this option (unless you can get everyone to agree to a cremation-which is cheaper). Oh! There is one other option you may not have heard about- he would have to sign papers for it- He can donate his body to science. A medical school can use the body to study cancer as well as give medical students a chance to practice suturing, etc.

I don't think there are any grants for this type of thing. Cremation is the least expensive...something to think about anyway. If he has no real property he can be buried as an "indigent" meaning the state will pay for it. Talk to a funeral home for alternatives.

that's funny
Find out if he was really in the army with an honorable discharge he should get a pension and insurance from them for health and other benefits. Plus if he owns nothing the state buries people who own nothing its called paupers graves in some states. Check your local county clerks for more information.

Sometimes the state will give grants for that. Also, funeral homes will help out. But the state should also give a burial plot. I hope this helps. I'm praying for your uncle still. God bless you!

There are life insurance policies for people with cancer. Call a few life insurance agents in your area and ask about "Guaranteed Issue" Life Insurance. Give your uncle's age. Expect this to be expensive and expect that if he dies in the first year that the insurance company will pay back his premiums plus some interest. He still could live another couple years so this may work out.

Jake59
I do not understand that uncle was in the Army. If is vet has no bad conduct discharge, the government will pay for his funeral. Call the VA or look it up on line. You need find out more his time in the Army and call the VA for help.

I'm not sure, I think u can go to a hospital that donesnt need LI. Did you know that at first life insurance was called death insurance, and no one bought it!

Jackmac :P~

FIRST, insurance is not something you buy when you are sick! You buy it when you are healthy IN CASE you get sick. Why would anyone say to you, "give us a small monthly payment and next month when you die, we'll give you back thousands of dollars". THINK PEOPLE, if its too good to be true, that's because it is. Insurance is a pooling of peoples money to be used in case one of those people suffers a catastrophic loss. That way everyone pays in a little at a time and the one who has the unexpected disaster won't go bankrupt if something major happens to him at random. You can't just join a club and be the first to collect the windfall, that's why they don't want you in the insurance pool when you are know you are going to be the one who collects right away. It is trying to take advantage to all the good people who bought and paid for their insurance all along.

His Social Security will pay a couple hundred in death benefits. Donate his body to science. No charge to the family.

Usually, a person's heirs are liable for debts including burial costs. Some bodies are donated to medical schools to avoid these costs. If no university will accept the body because of its condition, you can minimize expenses by eliminating all ceremonies and cremating the body. Some localities have provisions for burial of paupers check with the medical examiners or coroners office or the sheriff's department.

My experience has been that veterans are given a burial lot, so that's one less expense. A long, lengthy wake & funeral are not necessary and generally are burdensome both financially and emotionally on the family. Talk to a local funeral home director to find out what your options are - perhaps a one day viewing with a funeral service in the evening would work. Cremation is generally a less expensive option (the casket is usually rented not purchased) and the ashes can be buried in the free veteran's lot. All the best to your family during this difficult time.
