courtney! | What do they do for families who cannot afford a funeral? |

Inquire with a funeral director. They would know much more than most of us about this type of situation. There could be a social services agency or a charitable organization in your area that could help.
If that fails, you might try to seek out private assistance for them If you have funds to offer, that would be a good start. Since he/she was your very close friend, you probably know others that were close and they might be willing to help out. |

In most states, some form of public aid allowances are available from either the state, county, or city or a combination. Most funeral directors are aware of the various benefits and know how to obtain them for the indigent. However, funeral directors often absorb costs above and beyond what is provided by agencies to insure the deceased a respectable burial. |

From the morgue to the crematorium I guess is where the body would go, without any "service" that people would expect. There would still be costs, but only for the cost of the service and the container for the body /ashes.
Some places have what's called "potter's fields", a cemetary of sorts where people who are too poor (like the homeless) or can't be identified are buried by the local government in simple pine boxes. Though that is definitely more of the last ditch option, because I dont think many people would feel right leaving a loved one buried in a field with many many other unknowns or abandoned people. |

in general--they are sent to "potter field". it's a graveyard for people with no means. however, a lot of time--the local paper will publish a basic death notice for little to no money. talk to the local funeral home and see if something can be worked out. cremation is MUCH cheaper. also, if they were church member-talk to their church. i'm sure enough people could come together to come up with enough $$ to provide a decent burial |
