oafgirl | What do you think about charging morbidly obese people more for health insurance? |
They have just added $25/month for people with a BMI of >35 for Alabama state employees Additional Details Smokers pay $25/month more already |

I actually think that's very cheap. It's a given that a smoker and a morbidly obese person are going to rack up more medical costs then say your average weight, non-smoking person who exercises regularly and eats a good diet. I'm not being mean, but they should have to pay more for insurance because chances are extremely high that their insurance company is going to have to pay a lot more out on them then someone who isn't either. But there's also a remedy for it if you don't want to pay the extra $25/month; quit smoking and/or lose weight. We have all made poor decisions regarding our health, and now we are paying for them, both financially and physically. |

I think it is absolutely fair. People always try to put health insurance in a different category than other insurances. Let me ask the following... Should someone charged with drunk driving pay more for car insurance or should you pay more for their extra risk? Should a person with lots of points on their license be charged more for car insurance or should the pool of drivers pay more knowing there is a risky driver out there? Should a smoker pay more for life insurance - knowing that he/she will not be able to contribute longer because they will likely perish earlier?
Health insurance is necessary for everybody. But, one problem with health insurance is that folks think that it shouldn't be administered the same way as other insurances. So, smokers think it is BS that they are getting charged more. Obese people think it's horrific that they are charged more. Even though, from an actuary standpoint, it has been proven that both categories of risk cost significantly more.
Let me use a personal example. I have a close friend who is 25 years old. She has never had health insurance -- although her company does offer it. Her company also offers a "buy-out" to employees who elect not to enroll in the health insurance. Recently, she became pregnant. Immediately she tried to enroll in her company's policy, but was unable to because it was outside her company's "open enrollment". She was furious! I asked her, passingly, if her company did offer the insurance would she stay on it after the birth of the baby? She noted that she wouldn't, she just wanted insurance for the birth of the baby and she reiterated that thought it was bullshit that the company wouldn't put her on the insurance.
Now, mind you, it costs tens of thousands of dollar to deliver a baby. But she only wanted the insurance through the length of her pregnancy. So, ultimately, she was saying, "I want to pay $50 a month for 9 months so that I can use about $20,000 of an insurance company's cost." She wouldn't put it that way, of course, but that's really what it amounts to.
This is just one of the problems with health insurance. People think it's a right, but they don't want to pay for it. |

Putting personal opinions aside:
That's capitalism. If you really need health insurance that bad then you will pay it.
Personal opinion:
People in this day of age need ALOT more self control. This is including smoking. We are quick to place blame on the company that provides the "Big Mac", the "Pack of Reds", or the "Tall Boy" instead of taking a realistic look in the mirror and seeing our own compulsions are lack of will power are to blame for a rising health insurance bill. Let me also add I am in favor of a national healthcare system but those whose compulsions are unhealthy should pay something more into the system. Therefor you still get free choice of what to put in your body with insurance to fix your body. |

25 bucks more isnt that much. If you think you'll need (and you probably will) then pay it. It makes sense so I think its fine. |

Ohio Health Insurance

I wrote an article a few months ago that touches on this topic (see below).
http://ohiohealthinsuranceplans.wordpress.com/2008/05/24/how-your-weight-affects-your-health-insurance/
If you smoke, weigh too much, or engage in hazardous sports and hobbies, chances are your rate will increase.
Is it fair? At the risk of losing some business...the answer is yes. A resounding yes at that!

They already do this. Often times, they cannot afford the coverage because of it. |

~~I think it's a very common practice. If good health choices aren't practiced then the violators pay higher rates. It's a way they can keep the premiums lower for those who to try and make healthy life style choices. Unfortunately, excessive weight, smoking, alcohol abuse, drugs, etc. all cost insurance companies allot of money in health related costs. It's not fair to ask the innocent to payer higher costs for these choices.~~ |

Personally, I think that everyone is drastically overcharged for their health insurance, but that's a slightly different issue. HMO's, PPO's, and their ilk currently base their premiums on community statistics; meaning that they have already taken into account the exacerbated rate of obesity in Alabama which is one of the highest in the nation. To charge them an additional surcharge wouldn't be fair from that perspective. Another issue is that many obese folks are more susceptible to obesity than others; some are a combination of behavioral and hereditary issues. Where would you draw the line, should you make the distinction. Of course there is also the elephant in the parlor that noone is willing to talk about - fast food. Maybe there should be a tax imposed on companies that provide an unhealthy menu? |

I think it should be more. They choose that life style and have to live with the consequences. Honestly, I think it would help get them to loose wait or drop habits. It has me and I'm 100lbs over weight (don't look it though :) ). The only health coverage I can get are over priced discount plans.
I also believe they should stop providing coverage for people over certain limits. 2 packs a day and 100lbs over. They are at a higher risk and drive every ones rates up. |

I think it's fair. They charge bad drivers more for auto insurance, so why not charge people who make bad health choices more for medical insurance?
Do they charge smokers more as well?

I think on some level it is unfair. I am concidered morbidly obese but I dont have health problems. I go to the doctor for yearly exams and I dont take maintenance medications. My cholesterol levels and sugars are fine, why should I pay more?
also if you are going to charge people for weighing too much you need to charge people who are too thin... People with anorexia cost insurance a lot of money, sometimes more then fat people.
One more thing.... How is weight being tracked here? Weight charts ? Skin fold tests? Dunk tests? Honestly weight charts aren't accurate, skin folds tests are only accurate if the examiner is good at it, and dunk tests are expensive. Just saying. |
