A customer service representative or CSR is a common position at an insurance agency or brokerage as opposed to an insurance company. At an insurance agency or brokerage a CSR has many duties. As the name implies, they handle the needs of the insureds such as adding cars to auto insurance policies, making changes to various policies, issuing certificates of insurance, assisting the agent or broker in putting together proposals for prospects, answering phones, making sure policies get renewed on time, setting up premium financing, etc. A licensed CSR who moves up to an account manager position in an insurance brokerage that handles commercial insurance can earn a VERY good salary. Plus, a knowedgable, efficient and effective CSR or Account Manager never lacks for job opportunities. Insurance is a great industry for building a career.

you take abuse from customers all day. you have to explain why their premiums are so high,or why the company isnt going to pay their rightfull claim.

Like any "customer service" position it's mostly taking complaints. Many people don't have the vaguest grasp of their own insurance policies and can't be bothered to read their manuals, so you end up answering the same questions over and over. You should also take into account that insurance companies are not all that popular with most people, and as the contact with the public you're going to take a lot of negative energy.

It depends largely upon if you are a customer service rep via telephone or by another medium. I would assume it is a phone job since 99% of insurance company CSRs are phone reps.

Their main job is to answer a LOT of phone calls a day. People have a customer service number on their card and they call it when they have questions about their policy, what it covers, need a new card, need something sent to them, have payment issues or questions, are angry about a denial, want to get reimbursed for something, etc. You would also likely get calls from prviders (doctors offices) calling to verify eligibilty of a member and to confirm their benefits coverage level. You may even get calls from some sales agents to check the status of an application for a prospective client.

Of course all of this will vary a great deal from company to company as well as from department to department. What kind of insurance the service center handles will greatly change your possible duties, and the nature of your calls. How it's designed and managed will determine the volume of calls & expecatations, but surely you will need to be postitve, friendly and efficient in both you telephone and computer (data entry, research) duties.

Some people hate this and some love it because they get to help people. Compensation again depends on the company and how they structure it.

Answer customer questions, sometimes make policy changes.

Most frequently, it's related to billing questions.

Most likely you're going to be working the phone. Insurance companies have two main operations: sales, and service. On sales, you're helping people get quotes for insurance. Take their specs, input into system, wait for quote, relay to customer.

In service, you could be doing anything from processing payments, to starting claims, fielding questions, etc.

In short, you'll be on the phone in front of a computer.
