Kyle H | What does it mean to be bonded? |
|
|

It does NOT mean you're "covered against accidents and legal problems".
A bond, is a GUARANTEE, from an insurance company that YOU, the obligor, will or will not do something specified (will perform a job, will not steal this, etc), to a specified third party, the obligee, (like the State of Maine). And if you do not do what you're supposed to, the insurance company will pay a pre-determined amount (the face value of the bond) to the third party.
Example: You need a bond to be a notary. The insurance company guarantees your state, that you WILL do the paperwork correctly and keep records, for anything you notarize, and if you don't, the insurance company will pay the state $3,000.
There are dozens and dozens of different kinds of bonds. Tons. So you have to get the right bond that the contract requires. A bond will never PAY YOU. It will only ever PAY THE THIRD PARTY. And an insurance company won't issue the bond, unless they're pretty sure they won't have to cough up the $$ - it's NOT like insurance, with a built in calculation for losses. That means, if this is a theft bond, you'll likely have to personally guarantee the bond amount with an irrevocable letter of credit from your bank, or other assets. |

If you're bonded with honesty, you should stick with that. |
