julie800649 | What does risk assesment mean in the work place?? |
|
|

It means identifying anything that could be a risk to anyone e.g electrical cables, carpets, doors, PC's, stress, lifting, machinery etc.
Once the potential risks have been identified and recorded you need to identify who they might be a risk to.
If a risk is then identified following daily inspections then the inspector needs to determine if it is High, Medium or low risk. If the risk can be removed there and then no more needs to be done except record it. If it cannot then the danger needs to be isolated until it can be rectified. You must have seen the signs when floors have been mopped to say " Be careful - Wet Surfaces - You may slip"
Ther are loads of websites to help but the Health and Safety Executive's is probably the best.
It is the manager's responsibility ultimately to make sure the workforce is safe but it is everyone's responsibility to keep themselves safe and report dangers. |

Generally, it is an analysis of the chances of a claim ocurring during the policy period. Insurance is the exchanging of a large uncertain "risk" for a small certain "risk". In other words, the insurance company takes on the possibility of a large claim in exchange for you paying them a certain, much smaller, premium. Your "loss" is certain if you pay the premium. The insurance company wants to know what the chance of their uncertain risk occurring is. That is the risk assesment. It is used to determine if the insurance company wants to place the coverage or not. |

Whenever you want to get insurance, the insurance company will generally come by and do a thorough check of the building things like that.
This is just in case the owner notices that a ceiling is about to fall in, he won't decide to get last minute insurance so when the roof collapses, he can't just get immediate payment when he hasn't been on the policy long.
Also, if there is a disgusting mold coming out of the wall and it makes everyone sick, the insurance company will make the owner clean it all up, so the insurance won't take a beating for a company's uncleanliness.
It's basically a way for the insurance to know that you genuinely want insurance, and so you won't take them to the cleaner by having a bunch of faulty things in the building.

making sure thats its safe for staff
no cables lying for tripping
if you look around your workplace there are many risks the assesment just means how you make them safer and make staff aware if it has to stay that way like a mind your head sign |

I'm not sure of the number of employees, but if you employ more than a certain number of employees (my mind says 3-5 employees), then you are required by law to carry out Health & Safety assesments. Furthermore you must also have H&S procedures in place which would include having a H&S accident/incident book etc. I strongly suggest you do some research elsewhere than just asking here on Yahoo. |

It depends very heavily on the type of workplace and what risk is being assessed. I work in medical malpractice, so risk assessment usually means identifying problems in training, procedures, and communication in a doctor's office or hospital. If the insurance is meant to cover employment practices, then the assessment will study HR procedures. If it is general liability assessment maitnence procedures may be assessed (to prevent things like slip and fall). |

Assessing risks to health and safety
Five steps to risk assessment
Five steps to risk assessment aims to help you assess health and safety risks.
A risk assessment is an important step in protecting your workers and your business, as well as complying with the law. It helps you focus on the risks that really matter in your workplace – the ones with the potential to cause real harm. In many instances, straightforward measures can readily control risks, for example ensuring spillages are cleaned up promptly so people do not slip, or cupboard drawers are kept closed to ensure people do not trip. For most, that means simple, cheap and effective measures to ensure your most valuable asset - your workforce - is protected.
The law does not expect you to eliminate all risk, but you are required to protect people as far as ‘reasonably practicable’. This guide tells you how to achieve that with a minimum of fuss.
This is not the only way to do a risk assessment, there are other methods that work well, particularly for more complex risks and circumstances. However, we believe this method is the most straightforward for most organisations.
--------------------------------------...
What is risk assessment?
A risk assessment is simply a careful examination of what, in your work, could cause harm to people, so that you can weigh up whether you have taken enough precautions or should do more to prevent harm. Workers and others have a right to be protected from harm caused by a failure to take reasonable control measures.
Accidents and ill health can ruin lives and affect your business too if output is lost, machinery is damaged, insurance costs increase or you have to go to court. You are legally required to assess the risks in your workplace so that you put in place a plan to control the risks.
--------------------------------------...
How to assess the risks in your workplace
Follow the five steps in this leaflet:
Identify the hazards
Decide who might be harmed and how
Evaluate the risks and decide on precaution
Record your findings and implement them
Review your assessment and update if necessary |
