What does t AARP stand for?
I just have never heard what the actual letters stand for. They send my dad a lot of junk mail and I am just curious.

Years ago when they were a lobbying group for seniors, the name was actually American Association of Retired Persons.

Today they are mainly a marketing company for life and health insurance companies. They still have "not for profit" status but have many executives making million dollar salaries from the commissions on the insurance policies they sell.

They have lost much credibility through the years.

From their web page:

People also do not have to be retired to join. In fact, 44 percent of AARP members work part time or full time. For these reasons, AARP shortened its name in 1999 from the American Association of Retired Persons to just four letters: AARP. The median age of AARP members is 65, and slightly more than half of them are women.

I concur with the gent who said they are a big fat lobbying group. They are basically like a union for oldsters, but they nose their whining, liberal beaks into every freaking thing on Capitol Hill. I look forward to the day I can mince their membership offer & send it back in a zipper baggie. : )
